Tuttle Publishing Balinese Art: Paintings and Drawings of Bali 1800 - 2010

Excellent explanation of Balinese art with very good graphics. This book is a good way to prepare for a visit to Bali (and in particular Ubud) if you plan to devote time to Balinese painting. I read this and some other books, learned something about Hinduism by reading Knott's Short Guide to Hinduism and watching English-subtitled movie versions of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. I'm no expert and there may be better ways to prepare, but I do you will have difficulty understanding and appreciating Bali's extraordinary traditions in painting without some advance study.

A masterful and comprehensive treatment of both types of Balinese art: that produced by Balinese artisans, for use in the complex traditional aspects of Balinese culture, and that produced by Balinese artists, to participate in the very lively commercial art market.

Having collected some beautiful pieces from Bali, I now know the history and lore behind some of them. A great reference book on the subject.
