Moussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition: The Masterworks Library (Boosey & Hawkes Masterworks Library)

Mussorgsky's music is well known, well used in many ways. This arrangement of his most famous piece, a collection of piano sketches based on an art exhibition of a recently deceased friend, honors the source, but colors the music with strong textures, often brilliantly applied. The true majesty of some of the melodies comes through due to Ravel's musical imagination. Boosey & Hawkes present well-printed and easy to read scores (unlike some from the Dover Press). If you want to learn orchestration, getting this edition and studying Ravel's choices is good start.

Interesting edition. In the last movement, the percussion parts is different than the earlier published edition.

Great edition with a lot of useful information and accurate printing of the work through multiple editions. Great resource and addition to any library!

Notation is just perfect, don't hesitate to buy. The only downside is, i personally prefer spiral bound paper work but this one works just fine.

Congratulations to Boosey and Hawkes for here republishing a staple of the orchestral repertoire (Maurice Ravel did an outstanding job of arranging Musórgskiy's piano original, though I wish he had included the "Promenade" immediately prior to "The Market-Place at Limoges"), with beautiful layout and a scholarly quality in terms of editing out mistakes in the previous edition. I'm also pleased that they mention where Ravel (as well as the Rímskiy-Kórsakov piano-edition) differs from Musórgskiy's original version. Definitely a MUST for any score library and for any real music-lover!!!Most warmly recommended, greater than 100%!!!

Moussorgsky's most famous work, "Pictures at an Exhibition" (orch. by Maurice Ravel) is available is this very nice edition from the Boosey & Hawkes Masterworks Library. This work has been one of the most performed orchestral works by American symphony orchestras over the past few years and is a major piece in the repertoire. Good score

My only reason for taking away one star is that I find the print a bit small and the layout slightly too dense. Although I'm not sure what other options the editors would have had to improve those aspects.
