I took the plastic cover off and place the battery in my pocket so that it would be available for my referee whistle. The batter got very hot.Something I was not expecting

I'm a guy who replaces 9V batteries in the smoke detectors, et al in my house once a year. I bought these InterState Battery 9V batteries because I have Interstate Batteries in all my vehicles. They've been reliable, well priced and most importantly, made in the USA. Not these 9V's. Made in China.I replaced one of those copper look'n batteries in that smoke detector that's WAY up there in a vaulted ceiling as soon as I got these. That battery was OLD, but working. Within DAYS, this Interstate Battery failed and the smoke detector began chirping in the middle of the night. Label on the box says" "use before 2028." Right. Gimme a break. Considering where it's made, it's wonder it lasted a week....
