Dangerous machine.
One star for the machine, an extra one for the recipe. I bought one of these machines two months ago. I agree with the person who said it is a dangerous machine as it can very easily cause severe burns. The lid is unstable and the handle is searingly hot. Hot steam escapes over your hand when you open it, so always use a silicone mitt when using the machine. If it hasn't already caused significant burns to users, I would be very surprised. The machine also has hot spots so that when one part of the cone is perfect, there are already burned spots elsewhere.However- the cone recipe is lovely. It is easy to roll and crisps up even if you stop cooking when it is pale, to avoid burnt spots.Still, there are recipes on the web so that is not a good reason to buy this machine.I think it is worth spending the extra money to buy a better brand, which I will now do.

Smart Planet Pp5 Ice Cream Waffle Cone Maker
Handle is really close to the heating plate no wonder is getting hot. It is getting over heated after hour or two need to cool it down and switch it off - don't recoment for mass production but is good for home carefull use.Lights on top don't work properly. But is working both plates get heated evenly.

Very poor quality for a very high price
We are extremely disappointed in this waffle cone maker. We've used another brand for many years in Germany and had to find a replacement in the USA due to the difference in electricity, and made the mistake of assuming that a $70 machine would be of high quality. The waffle maker's cooking surface is of a cheap quality. The lid is very light and very easily falls shut (or falls on your fingers) while you are trying to take off a waffle. The lid latches shut whenever it is closed, and opening the latch requires pushing a button under the lip of the lid, where hot steam is coming out from the waffle batter. The heat is uneven - all of our waffles have a clear brown ring around the outside and are undercooked in the center. And the indicator lights do not work at all - it's possible our machine is simply defective, but the only way to tell when the batter is done is with a stopwatch. We were very excited to have our traditional German Neujahrskuchen this winter, but after cursing for an hour to produce 15 mediocre waffles, we will be sending this horrible waffle maker back for a refund.

Great for amateur ice cream makers
I ordered this product on a whim one afternoon and wanted it the next day so I could make waffle cones for a 4th of July picnic. It came, and it almost conquered. If you've ever wanted waffle cones at home, this is a pretty easy and inexpensive way to take the consumption of ice cream to the next level. The good: It heats up relatively quickly and its nonstick surface is easy to clean. Its instruction booklet comes with two recipes (original and chocolate). The original is pretty good. This appliance will smell pretty darn good if you don't leave the batter in too long. It makes for a good-sized cone, but can also do minis if you'd like. OR you can place a waffle over a tea cup or glass to make a waffle bowl.Things to look out for with the APPLIANCE:MESSY--as with most kitchen endeavors, waffle cone making is a messy process with any iron/method. With this product, make sure you have a towel or plate underneath it to catch any batter spillage. If you're putting in 1-2 tbs of batter, it should be pretty minimal.HOT--Use a hot pad or towel to open the iron after it's done cooking. Have a butter knife or thin spatula on hand to remove the waffle from the iron and to place it on a towel on your rolling surface. Use the towel to roll the cone with the provided cone mold so it doesn't burn you.Extra things about waffle cone making in general:See above, because it's going to be true for most methods.Try David Lebovitz's waffle cone recipe from The Perfect Scoop (available from Amazon) or Jeni Bauer's recipe from Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream At Home (also on Amazon). Finally, the best recipe I've done so far is actually Gluten-Free! [...]The above authors/ice cream makers give good tips on the process as well.I'd recommend this product to anyone interested in making waffle cones for fun--it's definitely a hit with parties, family and friends. It is not, however, NSF-certified and if you're in the business of making ice cream, you'd already know that and be looking elsewhere.

Love it
This is now our second Smart Planet waffle cone maker. The first one worked great and we made hundreds of cones. Eventually we just wore it out. We bought a new one because we use it so often in the summer time. The recipe is also great!

Great little appliance
We have had a great deal of fun with it but still haven't mastered the art of waffle cone making. At least it has all been edible.Cons:1.Didn't like the recipe that came with the book so we have used the recipe in David Liebovitz's 'The Perfect Scoop'.2.Secondly, the waffle maker gets super hot, most of the time we are able to open it with our hands but sometimes we need a cloth.3.The waffle maker actually has a temperature control, ie when it gets too hot it turns off, below a certain temperature it turns back on again. The problem with this, is it cools down too much and then the waffle takes longer so I end up opening it repeatedly to see if it is us.This appliance is less than perfect but for the price and the fun factor, worth it. I bought it just to try out waffle cone making and if I really liked it and wanted to do more could research and get a higher end one. So far, I am fine to stick it out with this one, not ready to invest yet but still having fun..
