bland translation...
Akira Hiramoto is one of those rare authors that excels at ecchi, and is great at drawing fun artwork and expressions. Coupled with his great sense of comedic timing, both Raw Hero and Prison School are like nothing else. Unfortunately the U.S. versions just aren't up to the same quality.I wasn't a fan of Yen Press' decision to do Prison School in over-sized 2-in-1 volumes using a paperback format with covers that seemed too thin for the size of the book. I found that unless more than normal caution was taken the spine was prone to creasing. So I was happy to hear that Raw Hero was going to be released in single volume formats.Unfortunately the trade off is a very bland translation. for example...*Spoilers*During the confrontation against the JMT, Chiaki and Ryu Hoshi are forced to retreat. Prior to the confrontation Ryu Hoshi makes the statement "The first to die are those without guts." I'm not a writer so I wouldn't be able to give a better translation. But the play on words should have been closer to those without determination or resolve or something to that effect. Later on when Ryu Hoshi almost dies Chiaki repeats the saying. By using the slang "guts" it is implied that Ryu Hoshi died from lack of courage. But the joke is that even though the van had slowed down to a glacial pace, Ryu Hoshi lacked the fortitude and determination to reach the van, not that somehow his cowardice kept him from sprinting. Ryu Hoshi is a coward, but the punchline was that he is an out-of-shape slob that is trying too hard to look cool. There are a few other small nitpicks, but the one that I find most disappointing is the translation of the leader of SALF's name. As those who have been able to read more of the current chapters know, her special abilities, besides strength and speed, involve using a pair of whips that she is able to electrify. Her monster name is a play on words with those weapons: Jelli E. Fish. Jelly Fish. Get it? It's not highbrow but it is pretty humorous in its simplicity. So the only thing I can think of is that Ko Ransom is not familiar with the material and was only translating the chapters as they came to him because he instead chooses one of the possible literal enunciations: Jerri E. Fish. Which is an optional translation and he isn't wrong doing so, but once again misses the punchline or at the least stretches the joke and loses much of its vibrancy.I've read Ko Ransom's translations of Bakemonogatari, and I know he is a very capable and funny writer, being able to deftly blend wit with meaning. So I'm left disappointed with the results of Raw Hero. It comes across as a bit of a lazy attempt. Maybe it was just a job that paid the bills rather than a work that he felt passionate about? Otherwise, the art is fantastic and the story is unpredictable. I don't mind recommending it to new comers and I think a lot of readers will enjoy the series. But speaking only for myself, I'm going to import the volumes to support the artist, and will most likely pass on any future American volumes.

A Good Start
RaW Hero collects the first 6 chapters and has nudity and sexual situations. What is it about?Superheroes in society under government control. A ragtag liberation front. A young man trying to provide food and money for his two young brothers who can't get a job...until he is recruited by the police to cross-dress and infiltrate the liberation front. What did I think? This was good. Previously, the author did Prison School (a raunchy high school sex comedy manga) so as expected there are absurd sexual fantasies sprinkled throughout this volume. The pace isn't as frenetic as Prison School, and some may even say that it's a slow start, but I felt like the author built up a good foundation so that the story can now go off the rails bonkers in volume 2. There are still a good amount of mystery to unfold, and the absurd infiltration undercover work is great.A unique take on a superhero world.

Decent read
Honestly.. I wasn’t a fan of the first few chapters, the artwork and funny characters are partially what kept me around. I found the manga to be a fun read, definitely made me laugh out loud a few times. The plot was decent, and there are a few minor plot holes. If you look last that though, the action is similar to Prison School (written by the same mangaka) and the artwork, line details, it’s all very well done. In my opinion it ties things together and makes this an enjoyable read. Raw Hero takes place in a world where some people posses special abilities. The ones who use them for “good” are called HEROES, the ones who do the opposite are “Fiends”.The main character Chiaki has 2 little brothers who he struggles to care for, while clearly having an identity crisis, but regardless does his best. In the begging of the story he’s looking for a new job so he can give his brothers a better life. On his way to an interview, he spots some pervert harassing someone and jumps in without thinking, which leads to the chain of events that make up this story. My favorite character is definitely Mariko, she’s really mvp of the manga for sure, she carried it on her back lmaoo.-Kay ❄️
