Susan Ashwood (Irene Dunne) lost her husband to one war. Will she lose her son to another? Radiating elegance and warmth, Dunne gives "one of her finest performances" (The Movie Guide) in this heartfelt romantic drama as an American who becomes the bride of a handsome British aristocrat (Alan Marshal), only to see him march off to the Great War and never return. Years later, England plunges into World War II and the past threatens to repeat itself when Susan's son (Peter Lawford) enlists to fight the Nazis. A Who's Who of '40s stars from Van Johnson to Elizabeth Taylor (just before her breakthrough role in National Velvet) lend sterling support to an inspiring story of one woman braving the tragedy of war.

A beautiful Hollywood film
This film starring Irene Dunn and a very young Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowell is multi-generational and gives you a feeling what a mother went through when during world war 1 and world war II she had to let her husband brother son go into the wars. It is one of my favorites!

Superb M-G-M Movie with a wonderful Cast
Sure, the movie is dated and looks like a propaganda but it was made in 1944. And also, its not a action War Movie like it would be it today. They talk alot but also the movie has great decors and costumes. Its a wonderful love story about a american woman who meet in the time of WWI a english aristrocrat, marry him and she's loosing him in the War. She got a Son, John II (first played by the great Roddy MacDowall as boy and then as young man by Peter Lawford). As the WW2 beginns she may loosing him too. As young boy he's dating the farmers daughter Betsy, played by the young Elizabeth Taylor who became later famous for "Cleopatra".Not only the main Cast (Irene Dunne, Alan Marshall, Frank Morgan,) is interesting also the supporting as I wrote above: Elizabeth Taylor, Roddy MacDowall, Van Johnson, Peter Lawford. In uncredited parts you can see Gary Gray (Boy at Dinner Table) and Tom Drake (a dying american Soldier) who had a supporting role in "Meet Me in St. Louis".The DVD:the picture Quality is (I was very suprised) very good (of course not perfect) because its not restored and remastered.the only minus point: the movie has no subtitlesthe Bonus-Features: contains only a trailer.

Well Done MGM
Well Done MGM. While those of you living in the USA can be thankful to TCM and other dedicated movie channels that may make this release superfluous,In Europe the chance of getting a good quality issue of this movie is non-existant. I often wonder what some people are looking for when all they ever do is complain that there are no added extras included on the disc.Serious movie collectors are looking for the Movie, only the movie and nothing but the movie- in best possible quality. I can't begin to list the thousands of DVD's I've purchased/rented/borrowed where I have not even bothered to look at the extras menu.Only in cases where the original participants are still around and are willing to take part in a doc/interview is it of interest.Alternatively, where the movie it'self is of such great importance that a documentary (NOT THESE PATHETIC BEHIND THE SCENES Tidbits)is made (-best example that spring's to mind is "The Making of GWTW" by Turner in 1982)then the extras become important. So MGM - keep it going - it is unrealistic to expect every movie to be commercially released - therefore I am more than willing to go to the source for a good copy than to some Fly-by-night pirate operation. As to the quality of this release - sound and visual - 90/100.I hope that the other major studios will follow suit and open up their vaults.Mark Hood /Germany)

NO subtitles!
I know I would have enjoyed this movie so much more IF it would have had "subtitles"! It is never clear if a movie you purchase has them or not! Some, yes, it is said clearly that they do have subtitles for the very hard of hearing, but you always take the chance of one NOT having them, then you can't understand one word out of 30. Also, the sound quality of this movie was awful! I had the sound turned up as far as it would go, and both my husband and I could just barely hear it then. PLEASE, those who sell movies~ let us KNOW in big writing if the movie has "SUBTITLES"....what a wonderful thing that would be for those of us who have lost our hearing and need them so badly...

You might wish for a better reviewer than me. I loved Dunne as actress.
I bought this to see the difference from Orson Welles version where he tries to do himself at young and old. This version is more believable by far. Love to see the Politically Incorrect upbraiding of the British snobs by the lovely American. Whew! Irene Dunne carries the whole movie here. Amazing how time jumps are gigantic without spinning newspapers or time machines. No sex needed but children appear. Good clean fun.

This is one of my all time favourite movie. It is sad but authentic for war time and gives a perspective of what people suffered through the 1st and 2nd war.
