Make sure this fits your intended uses, still amazing lock
I bought two of these locks in preparation for returning from deployment. One lock is for the tuff tote that holds most of my personal belongings that will be mailed back, and the other for my Pelican Briefcase laptop case.My Pelican briefcase is designed in such a way that the reinforced holes where a lock would fit is beveled. As a result, the two pincer-like parts at the top of the lock did not slide in far enough for the bar to get through the holes. That didn't make much sense, either, did it? In short, the lock didn't fit the briefcase.I'm guessing this lock was designed with chains in mind. Of course it has other uses, the lock fit the tote nicely enough, but bear in mind the size of the pincery bits and what you'll be locking. But enough griping about my lack of foresight. The lock itself is still an impressive piece of work. It's just as heavy and sturdy as a heavy-duty lock should be. The way it locks - the key can only be taken out when the bar is secured - leaves no doubt that the lock is, well, locked. The keyhole cover is a wonderful afterthought. Out here, there is a disturbing amount of dust and crap in the air, and knowing that I can prevent at least most of that dust from clogging the keyhole is a big load off my mind.Bottom line: Really think about what you're locking. Chains should be fine, and most loop&latch configurations too. If you think this lock will fit, get one. Get another one, because you never know when you'll need a random lock.

As good as you can get for a protected shackle and every day use
Update Jan. 2017. This is one of the best locks I ever had. I use it to lock my fence gate. I've had so many different padlocks, both combination and key, and ALL were picked, mostly I guess through the shackle. Nothing is totally fool-proof, but it you need a reliable lock that keeps out the riff-raff, this is among the best. It is the size to lock a fence, a big locker etc. and will do its job.I got this lock after having soooooooo many key locks picked. I would get up and see the lock open and hanging on the side of my chain-link fence. I don't know honestly how easy this lock might be to pick. However, I learned (too late) that most people breach the lock by going through the shackle. So I figure you can't go wrong if you do what you can to get a lock with a protected shackle. I can't speak to it being cut with bolt cutters. That hasn't happened thus far. Like they say, if someone wants to get in badly, they'll find a way. Thieves are like that (too bad they don't spend as much time looking for work) anyway, I figure it can't hurt to make it as hard as possible to get in. Combination of using good security lighting and as best a lock as you can get. Of course a very big Rottweiler with very big teeth won't hurt either...

Might not fit your needs
I have to say this is a heavy and seemingly well-built lock. Just its size and weight give a sense of security that whatever it is protecting is going to be safe. Unfortunately, its shackle configuration means it will fit some latches but not others. I ordered this because I was having a PODS container delivered and I wanted a good lock on it once I started putting my possessions in it. It's going to be in a PODS storage facility for a while and I wanted something really sturdy. I was chagrinned to discover the padlock would not fit the latch on the PODS roll-up door. There is just not enough clearance for the shackle to pass through the holes in the latch. It's as much the fault of the design of the latch as it is the design of the padlock but the 2 designs are mutually exclusive -- they won't work together.I ended up using an old Master padlock with a nice big "U" shackle. It fit through the latch holes with no problem. Of course, its shackle is more exposed and would be easier to cut through with bolt cutters than the 187XD would be but, if the lock doesn't fit, it doesn't matter how protected the shackle is. The old padlock hadn't been used in so long I had to give it a few shots of graphite before I could get the key to turn but it's working smoothly now and should serve the purpose. The next time I go to the hardware store I'll check to see if they have any padlocks as sturdy as this one but which will fit the PODS latch. I'll hang on to this one for some future application.ETA: I poked around on Amazon and found a lock I think would work for me. The Roadpro RPLH-70 70mm High Security Brass Padlock has a configuration which should let it work with the PODS latch (and similar Public Storage-type latches) while preventing the use of bolt cutters or hacksaws. I'll look for something like that at the hardware store. Roadpro RPLH-70 70mm High Security Brass Padlock

Fair/Good
Wow. I just bought two of these from Amazon a couple of weeks ago for $27.63 each. I wonder what happened to make it go up so much in price. It's a good lock, but Amazon doesn't advertise that it's only a 6 out of 10 on the scale of strength. I have bought locks with a strength of 9 out of 10 for less money. The shrouded shackle is always good - no room to slip in a bolt cutter - but if I'd known it was only rated a 6, I would have gone for something stronger. Amazon needs to include the strength rating in their products.UPDATE: Here is a picture of the lock hooked over my finger (sorry for the poor quality). It'll give you an idea of how much space you have in the shackle area. The only size restriction will be in the width of the loop on your hasp. The shackle of the lock itself is about as thick as a standard pencil.

Hard as the hinges of hell.
If you have something like a portable generator that you want to lock down, this is the lock to use. I combine it with a 30’ 1/2” steel cable and it’s going to be next to impossible to steal my generator when left running outside. The shackle is just large enough to fit both ends of the cable loops but there’s no room for a thief to cut it. Great product.
