Q: can I open the bottle without damaging it? can i unscrew the lid?

Most bottles that I've owned & wanted to remove the atomizer top from have been able to "gently" & "carefully" be removed by using a sturdy pair of pliers or a small wrench. Advisor: these tops are put on the bottles with the plan that they do not leak as well as they don't come off. This particular bottle's atomizer doesn't seem to have threads allowing for simply unscrewing - so if you want the top off, you'll have to wear some eye protection as well as gloves, get a wrench/pliers & try to unscrew it. I do not advise anyone trying to do this as there's always the possibility the bottle will shatter in your hands.
