I adore Elise Kova! She has done it again..!
5 StarsI was a little nervous starting this as I ADORED Elise's original series in this world "Air Awakens" and then also loved her second series in the same world "Vortex Visions". There is always that worry that it won't be as good as previous books, but by my rating you can see I definitely did NOT need to worry!Firstly you can read this without reading the previous series but there is a lot of worldbuilding and background that you will miss out on and so I highly recommend reading them first as they are just also incredible fantasy books with amazing imagination and a lovely side of romance. This book is based around Eira who is Waterrunner. She has magic to control water and is an apprentice in the Tower where sorcerers learn their magic. The story involves a competition which was really well thought out. I won't say much more as I don't want to give anything away but I LOVED the story and although I guessed one twist, (it wasn't an obvious one) I was still shocked by so many other twists! Elise Kova certainly knows how to pack an emotional punch! These new characters are brilliant. Our lead Eira is fierce and brave, if a little naive and too controlled by her emotions. She is definitely going to be an interesting one to watch and I can't wait to see her character progress. The side characters were also fantastic and each added a lot to the book, especially Eira's best friend, a certain elfin ambassador and the prince of the tower. This world is so rich and filled to the brim with background and magic and that is down to Elise's incredible imagination and vision. I fall in love with her writing in every single book and this one did not fail. It is an effortless read because it just sweeps me and my imagination along. I did not want it to stop and am so glad I have the second book ready to read straight away!I highly recommend this series! But if you haven't, please read the other series first, you will thank me for it!!

Would definitely recommend this for lovers of YA fantasy
I want to say thank you to Elise for giving my an ARC of this book! All opinions are my own.4.5 starsSo I wanna start of by saying I loved this. I enjoyed it so much and it made me remember why I love Elise’s writing so much. This was definitely one of my most anticipated releases of 2021 and I’m glad I enjoyed it.Now to the reason it’s not a five star read. This book had a rough start. In the beginning a lot of the dialogue and writing felt forced and stunted. I found myself being confused multiple times and having to re-read sections over again. But luckily around the 15-20% mark things picked up and never let up again. I don’t want to spoil it so I won’t say much about the plot except I loved it. Elise really knows how to make things hurt in the best way. There’s so many call-backs to previous books in the Air Awakens universe. Which, in my opinion, means that this shouldn’t be read as a stand-alone. I would recommended that if you’re interested in this you read the whole air awakens universe. It will make this book make so much more sense. That being said you definitely could read this as a standalone but if you don’t it can feel like you’re missing some information.I loved the characters in this and I loved the characters from previous books in this universe making an appearance. Elise writes good, loveable, understandable characters that you can route for, and ones you can absolutely despise. I also enjoyed the portrayal of the complex sibling relationship beteeen Eira and Marcus that wasn’t always ‘I love you’ or ‘I hate you’.Overall, I really enjoyed this book once it started to pick up and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Best birthday gift!
My friend had asked for this for her birthday, and she was very happy to se that I had pulled through!Unfortunately I can't say much about the book since I haven't read it but judging by her reaction she must really like the author and/or the series.

a great read!
i picked this book for two reasons:1. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Elise Kova and her work *and i am not ashamed of that*2. this cover reminded me of Sorcery of Thorns and i also LOVE Sorcery of Thorns so you know, i HAD to buy this one.And the cover was also pretty, but which book from Elise doesn't look pretty? the answer is none. they are all gorgeous.I was curious about this one - i loved Air Awakens series and i also really enjoyed "Deal with the Elf King" so i was kind of skeptic because i didn't know if this one would be as great as the others... but it was great! I really enjoyed this one and can't wait for theother ones to come out!“You know, I never wanted anything to do with you”(...)“I never wanted anything to do with you, either,” he whispered. “But here we are…and now I will fight for you.”Things i liked:- as always, the plot (pace was quick, i could follow everything)- world building- characters i know from Air Awakens- friendship between Eira and AlyssThings i did't:- that her hardbacks are so expensive here in Germany and i can't have all of them (BUT I am doing my best!)AND I haven't read Vortex Visions - it wasn't harder to read because of that.
