Father Knows Best: Season 4

Great Series!
I bought this series for my Hubby for Christmas this year (2022). We love this series and we're not from this generation. We're both in our very early 50's and love the simplicity of the show and dedication they show to family. It's a great series.

Hitting their stride
By season four the program and characters are hitting their stride and of course the kids are getting. The house is familiar, isn't it Mr. Wilson's House, Major Nelson's house, or does Hazel work there; no Shirley Partridge kids are practicing in the garage! A good transfer to DVD for a black and white show. Available at a great price.

Perhaps THE best "family" style sitcom ever produced
Perhaps THE best "family" style sitcom ever produced. Stories and situations were believable, not contrived as was most shows of its genre and time were. You actually feel the warmth and love that the cast portrayed for each other. This series is and was often overlooked because of the popularity of Leave it to Beaver, Donna Reed, and other similar shows, but comparing apples to apples, Father Knows Best stands above them all. If you have never seen this show, then by all means get a few of them. As a bonus, several of the episodes have the original openings with sponsors, and original non-syndicated end themes as well. Only complaint is that some of the episodes are syndication versions, with scenes cut, and end titles faded out before the Screen Gems logo appears. The was one of the very few shows that carried over from radio that was successful on television. The radio series ran from 1949 to 1954. Series ran on TV from 1954 through 1960. Robert Young's real life children were almost carbon copies of his tv family counterparts. Wish it had ran another couple of seasons, but the kids were really not kids any more, and the story lines would have had to been changed a bit. Perhaps that's why it ended when it did. Honorable mentions go to Donna Reed Show, for its depiction of a believable family. Radio episodes of FKB can be heard and downloaded online from the "internet archive". I think these are all now in the public domain.

It get's better each season!
Father Knows Best is one of those rare TV shows where the series gets better each succeeding season. In season 4, all the scripts are top-notch, the direction and photography are amazing, the acting superb, the music just right: they have the format down to a "t" to tug at your emotions. You'll laugh, cry a little, learn something, and in the end, wish you were a member of the Anderson Family. ShoutFactory did an amazing job with this season's set. They attached the correct season 4 opening credits to the episodes, and even though Sony-Screen Gems no longer has rights or interests in this series, they left in the "screen gems logo" at the end, the way us fans remember it, THANKS! The quality is great (on my 52" HDTV), the sound amazing for a 50 year old show. All episodes are uncut, running 25 1/2 minutes, about 4 minutes longer than you used to see when the series ran on the CBN Family Channel in the 80s and 90s. There are also some episodes not broadcast in a long time, Mr. Beal Meets His Match, is an example, once thought to be lost. You'll love this season, I recommend it highly.

Shout Factory crosses the bridge
Yes, Shout Factory decided to cross the bridge and release Father Knows Best season four! They didnt stop at season three like SONY or Warner Bros. might have. The next three seasons truly have the best episodes. The much talked about MR. BEALS episode is odd, spooky and ultimately satisfying. It scared me as a kid and still does now. You wouldn't see storyline like this on say My Three Sons or Ozzie and Harriett. For dog lovers there is A Friend In Need with its heart-tugging conclusion. When Margaret inherits a house to rent out she runs into a nasty spat with her neighbor, and his rosebushes, in the episode The Good Neighbor. Again Shout Factory goes the extra mile with clear, pristine and UNCUT transfers. Plus bonus segments from Robert Youngs' next series, Window on Main Street, two episodes! One final note-I can't say that I remember Bettys' character being so mean and selfish as she is in season four. Elinor Donahue plays the part to the hilt. This is one good buy!

Father is best
Series Four continues to be great viewing with excellent storylines all well acted by the cast who continue to work effortlessly with each other. Betty, the eldest daughter evolves into a real obnoxious self obsessive bitch. Jim and Margaret seem to hope that she'll grow out it but instead of improving her personality is getting steadily worse. She is still dragging around her handbag boyfriend Ralph whilst going out with just about every other boy in Springfield. She is revolting to her cousin Milly. If she were my daughter - I'd be so ashamed ! It's fascinating though to watch, there is a lot of psychological sub text to Betty that is played very close to the surface - Elinor Donahue does well. I wonder, is Ralph really a closet Gay and Betty consequently sexually frustrated ? Bud is growing up but still has no brains in the romance department either. Bring on the next series and by the way - How many series are there ?

Great Days of TV
I am so happy to find these great TV shows of the past, or more accurately of my childhood days. This show was a favorite ofmine and I can remember getting everything done on time so that I could watch it before bedtime. The premise of the father being the head of the home is lost in today's culture. This show would not be able to make it intoday's market - not even on TV Land, etc. any more. How sad!Today's children often do not know what a secure family situation is all about and these shows give an example to strive forand entertain at the same time. Being the same age as Kathy, I always paid the most attention to her and what she did and herhome seemed like a mansion to me.I trust that people will continue to buy and request shows from the past like this series.

The series gets better each year.
One astute reviewer noted disappointment with the first season and stated things started to gel in season 2. I agree in part. The first season by itself with its sometimes disjointed plot lines and overbearing/cringe inducing scenes made me not want to order season two. However, I did find it somewhat better than the first, and then season 3 better still. Season 4 has the best writing yet (Mr. Beal, Margaret driving, and Frank to name just a few) and now I'm resigned to buying seasons 5 and 6. The way Bud plays off of Princess and Kitten brings a much appreciated dose of comedy to the proceedings. Note that what will become Darrin and Sam's place in Bewitched is just a structure with what will be their garage on the left.

FATHER KNOWS BEST
Even though FATHER KNOWS BEST was already part of reruns when I was a child, I feel this series is a childhood memory for me. Furthermore, the actors are good; the stories are light and usually well written and acted. It is a classic that collectors of all level should have. I have every intention of owning the entire series. And as usual, the AMAZON products and customer service is Number One.
