Instructional manual needs revisiting... but lots of fun!
I gifted this set to my 8 year old grandson for Christmas. He was so very excited about it. When I received the box, it was taped closed but some very small nuts and screws fell out. I thought that was strange. When he opened it, it appeared to be new but there were other very small items loose within. As we did one of the structures we noticed that some of the directions (which are mostly pictures- which is great) were incorrect. We also noticed that the material list was not accurate. When he did the next project, again, instructions were off. He was able to work through building both items but I highly suggest the company revisit the manual. It is for this reason I have it 4 stars.

Great Christmas idea!
So many fun projects included in this set. A bit challenging to get started, but a good mental exercise for my 10 year old. Definitely suggest a parent nearby when they first set it up, but have since been able to let him roam free on the included projects. They are basic parts and pieces, but sturdy enough build quality that I expect these will be able to get used and re-used for a long time. Lots of wonderful engineering and STEM lessons included in a fun and attention grabbing way. It’s been a great way to get the tv off and spend quality time together. Would definitely recommend and works great as a present idea!

Cool but not clean and broken box
The product as a concept is pretty cool the problem is the box came with a lot of dust and a broken box.

Fun and educational STEM kit, but instructions need improvement
The Tinker Lab Home kit is a fun and well-put-together STEM kit with lots of engaging learning activities. You build a main stand first, and then use that stand as the base for many of the other projects. My main issue is with the Creator’s Guide (instruction manual). Some of the images don’t clearly match the actual parts included in the kit. For example, when assembling the base, the image at the top of the page looks different from the one at the bottom—and only the bottom image actually matches the piece in the box. The instructions also reference bolts and nuts, but there are multiple sizes included, so you have to guess which ones are correct. Another example is the LED light: the picture shows a white diode, but the one included is red. Several times we had to double-check and basically figure it out by process of elimination because there wasn’t another part that would fit. Some kids might be able to work through this on their own, but many will likely need adult help due to the unclear visuals. That said, I do really like the “Did You Know?” sections throughout the guide, which add extra learning and fun facts related to each project. For $39.97, the kit offers a lot of activities and educational value for your money—I just wish the instructions were clearer and better aligned with the actual pieces included.

Great kit, with some drawbacks
I got this STEM building kit for my child because I liked the idea of having lots of different science and engineering projects in one box, and overall it's been a positive experience. There are a huge number of components included and the kit offers over 70 different projects, ranging from simple mechanical builds to more advanced activities involving electronics and basic robotics. The quality of most of the parts is good. Everything feels reasonably sturdy and the pieces fit together well. There are enough components to keep children engaged for a long time, and I like that the kit encourages experimentation rather than simply following instructions and then moving on. Once you've completed a few projects, it's easy to start coming up with your own ideas and modifications. The instruction booklet is generally helpful, with step-by-step diagrams that make it easier to understand how each project goes together. There are also QR codes linking to video demonstrations for some builds, which is a nice addition and can be very useful when you're unsure of a particular step. What I particularly like is the educational aspect. The kit doesn't just show children how to build something, it also explains some of the science behind what's happening. It introduces concepts such as energy, motion, mechanics and basic electronics in a hands-on and engaging way. That said, I don't think younger children at the lower end of the recommended age range will be able to use this kit completely independently. Some projects are fairly complex and a parent will almost certainly need to assist with certain builds. I also noticed that some illustrations in the manual don't always perfectly match the parts supplied, which can occasionally cause confusion. Despite those minor issues, this is still a well-designed educational kit that offers many hours of learning and entertainment. It encourages creativity, problem-solving and practical thinking while providing a welcome alternative to screen time. Overall, I think it's good value for money considering the number of projects included and would recommend it to any child with an interest in science, engineering or building things.

Fragile thin wiring
Connecting the tiny electronic components together requires a very delicate touch and steady hands. The included wiring feels quite fragile to me, and one small connector snapped completely during a tighter bend around a plastic chassis. The paper instruction booklet relies heavily on illustrated diagrams that are sometimes incredibly difficult for me to interpret correctly. Building a moving motorized car took over an hour of frustrating trial and error, but it functioned properly afterwards. The small DC motors produce a high-pitched whine when running continuously. The mechanical building blocks snap together tightly, but pulling them apart again hurts my fingertips. The electronic circuit board handles reversed polarities without burning out immediately, proving quite forgiving during my accidental wiring mistakes. The wooden frame pieces splinter slightly when punched out of the holding boards. The provided battery box holds the cells securely, sending consistent power to the wheels without shorting out during rapid movement.

Good STEM/science kit – will provide hours of fun and learning
This kit comes with a myriad of parts, most of which appear to be well-made and of decent quality. One reviewer mentioned that the battery holder/pack in their kit didn’t work properly. The one I got works fine although I would’ve liked such a key part to have been made from slightly more robust materials. There are 72 science projects in total of which a handful could be regarded as robotics. Youngsters are also encouraged to use the component parts to come up with their own projects/designs. A good number of the project use common parts so some will need to be dismantled before another can be built. There is a generally good instruction booklet which is reasonably well written and has step by step illustrations. However, the booklet isn’t entirely consistent with some of the illustrations differing slightly from the actual parts and on one occasion the picture of the base board at the top of the page being completely different from the actual board itself and the other illustrations of the board on the same page! This could make things more difficult than they need to be, particularly for younger children, and is the reason I’ve only given the kit four stars. As well as the instruction booklet itself, there are nineteen short animated videos demonstrating how to undertake particular projects. Those videos can be accessed by scanning a QR code or going to the butterflyfields website. The learning process is also enhanced by short sections throughout the booklet explaining ‘What’s happening?’ in scientific terms e.g. a wound elastic band converting stored energy (potential) into motion (kinetic) as it unwinds. A lot of the projects seem potentially complex, particularly for kids at the lower age of the age-range, so I would see it more as a parent and child activity, rather than something to be undertaken solo. Seventy-four pounds might seem quite expensive but I think it is pretty good value given the number of different activities in the kit and the many hours of fun learning that they will provide.

Educational projects, which encourage creativity
I find this set as being much more than just another construction kit. It encourages children to think, experiment and solve problems, making learning feel genuinely fun rather than like schoolwork. I really like the fact that there are over 70 different STEM projects, which means the kit stays interesting for a long time instead of being built once and forgotten. There are plenty of opportunities to explore mechanics, simple electronics and robotics while developing patience and logical thinking. The instructions from the book provided are easy enough to follow with step-by-step pictures, although some of the more advanced builds will definitely benefit from a little help from us, the parents. I actually enjoyed building some of the projects together, and it became a great activity to share rather than just another toy. There are lots of components included, and it is satisfying to see how many different creations can be made from a single kit. It is also a great way to reduce screen time while keeping children engaged in something creative and educational. The overall quality of the pieces is good, they fit together well, and the finished models feel rewarding to complete. Overall, I think this is an excellent STEM kit for curious children who enjoy building and discovering how things work. It offers hours of educational entertainment and is a fantastic way to encourage creativity, engineering skills and problem-solving through hands-on play. Warmly recommend this lovely kit!
