heartfelt story and art about visiting a parent in prison
This is a lovely picture book, with a difficult story gently and sensitively told. Suitable for kids ages 5-10, approximately. The only harsh image is the arrival at the prison, where barbed wire is depicted. Most of the other images are close-ups of the girl, her father, and her grandmother, all of whom are lovingly depicted. This book normalizes the experience of visiting a parent in jail, without sugarcoating it. Truly well done.

Wonderful story for all ages
Wonderful story. My students loved it. And for those teachers worried about reading this book to children, don't hesitate. It is very sensitive to young readers who may be experiencing this same situation. Woodson is one of my favorite authors. Met her twice and she's such a warm and down to earth lady. Love her.

So good! A great way to start a conversation about parents or family members being in jail, common experience for many young children today. I felt like it was a great conversation starter for some something some students related to and opening up a new door to others.

The book leads you through the daunting preparation, process and procedures.
Brilliant book. The author uses her own experiences to emphasise that although a family member is in prison it doesn’t affect the bond which unites them.
