Get this one ASAP!
A "must have" book for newbies to the sport of fly casting for Chinook Salmon. On second thought, a "must have" for Salmon fly anglers at any level! The book contains numerous detailed photos of go-to flies used here in Oregon and around the Pacific Northwest tied by a group of experts in this often overlooked, very secretive and (usually) frustrating fishery. These are the guys that slide up next to you, drop anchor and within a few casts you hear their reels screaming and see the rods bent over double. The format of the book is awesome. On one page you're given a virtual peek at each tiers working fly box. On the next page you get all the specifications and details. Variations of the patterns, how they came about, tweaks, tying tips, presentation methods, etc. It's akin to a 15 minute "speed-dating" session with each of them! But instead of walking away with their phone number, you're provided with years of accumulated knowledge about fly fishing for salmon.Well done Mr. Nicholas.

No recipe information or steps on how to tie any of the patterns
The book is fairly useless as a guide for tying the flies mentioned. Most of the flies are common saltwater patterns that everyone already knows. It would have been helpful if the book was more specific in title so the buyer knows this is aimed at saltwater salmon fishing rather than river fishing. Also there are no recipes for any of the patterns instead the pages are filled with a bunch of fluff about the anglers that tie the flies and how many days a year they fish lol (who cares??). Jay nicholas’s other book on modern steelhead flies was good but this book is a waste of paper.

If you are looking for clear, concise, and informative information for tying flies for Chinookthis is it...but more than that J. Nicholas gives you alternative methods and materials that prove effective. His wealth of experience and knowledge come through loud and clear. Finally he provides insight on new trends in micro-intruders that are absolutely beautiful.

Do you salmon fish? Do you have these patterns?
All of these flies are beautifully presented and I was so stoked to find inspiration here, with in the cover of this book. Often times salmon focus so hard on certain patterns and this book really helped me as an angler adjust my scope of flies and encouraged me to branch out.
