King Richard III Paperback – Big Book, 25 March 1996

I will not comment on the play itself for obvious reasons. This Yale edition is excellent, however, for the editor’s note, the introductory essay and the extremely extensive annotations, without which the play itself is (for me) ten times harder to understand and appreciate.

Als Student kann ich diese Ausgabe von Richard III, ebenso wie die anderen Ausgaben aus der Reihe Annotated Shakespeare nur empfehlen. Man bekommt den Originaltext, dessen heute z.T. nicht oder nur schwer verständlichen Wörter und Wortspiele durch zahlreiche Fußnoten in modernem Englisch erklärt werden. Dabei wird lieber eine Übersetzungshilfe zuviel als zu wenig geliefert und bisweilen auch Begriffe erklärt, die man leicht hätte erschließen können. Aber lieber so als bisweilen ratlos vor den Zeilen des Meisters stehen. Vor- und Nachwort von Raffel und Bloom ersetzen sicher nicht die Sekundärliteratur, sind aber allemal ein brauchbarer Einstieg, wenn man etwa für eine Seminararbeit recherchiert. Das ganze zum moderaten Preis von ca 6 Euro. Für mich eine klare Empfehlung.

This is an excellent study guide for Richard III - ideal for various age groups. I used it with an A Level Performing Arts group and they found it very accessible, with the extra information such as the family tree, incredibly useful and helpful to appreciate the plot fully. The activity suggestions are particularly useful from the drama point of view. It also contains the full text of the play with useful notes.

Another excellent edition from Signet. Compact, but with clear print, unfussy notes, with excellent support material that enriches understanding and appreciation of the text. Perfect for the student or the casual reader. Oh, and the play isn't bad either !
