My 3rd Grader said we should by the whole series!
I read this book to my third grader as a history activity as we are talking about the beginning of written language and this book references the Rosetta Stone. We read one chapter book a week and he complains about half of them being boring (I think they are all great), he enjoyed this treasure hunt style book however and had fun looking up more about the British Museum, Cleopatra's Needle, Big Ben, and the Rosetta Stone. One of those rare instances where so much learning was going on and he thought it was just entertainment. We also happened to choose this book on the week that his Language Arts assignment was to study parts of a book (contents, glossary, bold text), so he had fun finding all those parts in a fun book that he actually liked. He didn't want to solve the codes in the book, but he seemed to really enjoy watching me work them out.

Fabulous, buy them all
Again can’t say enough about these stories. The vocabulary list, the quick facts, the incorporated puzzles, and the emphasis on Lottie being a learner are great. Can’t say enough good things!

Engaging, fun mysteries!
My 10 year old daughter (who is not a big reader) loved this book. It is very clever, and the puzzles are perfect for this age range to solve independently. Be prepared for your children to be writing in Morse code and running around the yard in trench coats. It inspired lots of fun play, and is also full of history. The characters are charming. The vocabulary is mostly very approachable, but they will learn some new words like, "frieze". There is a glossary in the back to help with historical names and places. She devoured the second book immediately after the first. Well done!

Lottie Lipton is an “investigator extraordinaire” young puzzlers and mystery buffs will love!
Lottie Lipton, a nine-year-old wannabe archaeologist adored reading the “True Mysteries” magazine. She was so taken by Scotland Yard’s Detective Inspector Victor Blade, it made her wonder if being a detective just might be a better career path. After all, since being orphaned at the age of four, Lottie had been living at the British Museum, which was “packed with precious artifacts from thousands of years of world history.” There were plenty of mysteries to be had at the Museum and, along with her Uncle Bert and Reg, the caretaker, they’d solved buckets of them!It wasn’t long before a mysterious break-in would lead them on another fabulous adventure. A jarring sound, “the sound of a window smashing and glass shattering on the floor” most certainly got their attention. There were a few small clues, but what would anyone want in the Museum? Hmmmm! Someone had been in the main exhibit hall and was messing around with the Rosetta Stone! Uncle Bert was all upset because this very special stone had “the same message in three different languages engraved on it: Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demonic, and ancient Greek.”Lottie, ever the young sleuth, noticed something most unusual. “There’s a secret message written on here!” The thief found the hidden message, one that just could let him know where “The Trident of Neptune” was. It was supposedly a “mythical object,” one belonging to a Roman god. Trevelyan Taylor, the Head Curator of the museum, had no love for either Lottie or Uncle Bert. Tricky Trevelyan offered up a bet: “You get the trident for the museum by tomorrow and I’ll double your pay. If you don’t, you’re fired!” Would Lottie be able to a super sleuth like Detective Blade and find the trident or would it be the end of Uncle Bert?!!Lottie Lipton is an “investigator extraordinaire” young puzzlers and mystery buffs will love! Many books for ‘tweens and teens have puzzles that are integrated into the plot lines that help solve mysteries. These have been beyond the puzzling talents of younger readers ... that is until Lottie came along. There are several puzzles (riddles and Morse Code) that will get youngsters to put on their thinking caps. Not only will they be able to become investigators extraordinaire themselves, but will learn some interesting facts about British history while doing their investigations. In the back is a glossary, extra puzzles, and a few interesting historical facts.Age Range: 4 to 8Grade Level: 3 to 4Reading Level: 3THE ADVENTURES OF LOTTIE LIPTON: The Catacombs of Chaos The Curse of the Cairo Cat The Eagle of Rome The Egyptian Enchantment The Scroll of Alexandria The Secrets of the Stone This book courtesy of the publisher (to library).
