Excellent reference!
I just got this and am already in love with it. Loads of useful information, and great illustrations. It’s not a book to read cover to cover, but I may anyway. The maps could be bigger, and there could be some spreads with multiple species for comparisons. Personally I’d love to see skulls too, but understand why they weren’t included. There are other minor wishes with what’s left out, but it’s already got a lot of pages and I’m content. It’s not meant to be totally comprehensive after all.

I've enjoyed every entry
An amazingly well documented book. I've enjoyed every entry, many species I'd never heard of before. I have been privileged to actually see some of the rarer gems over my many years visiting the Los Angeles Zoo; Zebra Duiker, Saiga, Japanese Serow, Giant Eland, Nile Lechwe, Lowland Anoa, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Arabian Oryx, just to name a few. Species exhaustive, extremely well written and outstanding photographs. A bovid and ungulate lover's collectors volume..

The largest field guide of all
There might not be a larger field guide out there - this one at 1.5 inches thick. With thousands of details to get right, I really have no complaints. However, I wish a few pronunciations were provided, e.g. Beira, Bharal. I noticed the shoulder height abbreviation (SH) found with all species was left out of the abbreviations used (p.23). The height of the man used as a comparison for all species would have helped. With the 140-odd species formerly accepted raised now to 279, it appears the splitters have trumped the lumpers. This is a wonderful reference book!

Just what I wanted
No page left unillustrated. The same format flows from page to page. Each 'Left' page displays a headshot: profile, frontal, full body of both Male and Female species . Each 'Right' page is text that lists behaviors, subspecies, similar species, habitat etc. It's a to-the-point edition with a brief breakdown of each species in a nutshell. This sequence is repeated throughout the book. Images are in full color!

Very useful to scientists and artists alike
Book goes down into every little detail about each animal. Images are well cropped and everything is easy to understand. Love studying this for art, and it's a nice thing to read while swinging in a hammock.
