SNAFU: Hunters

Some stories are too long
Some stories are too long and boring. Long and boring are not a good combination. Some of the other stories are really good. So average of 3 starts.

A personal favourite is the Japanese-inspired Two Birds
The tales in this dark collection take us on a tour of the world. Indeed, the editors’ note in the inside pages tells of their decision to retain the grammar of each author’s home country, in itself a heads-up to the international richness of this collection. There is a story of a Viking rune witch, one in which vampires re-infest modern London, demons are summoned in occupied France, while ghouls, reavers, and other monsters prey on innocents in Vietnam, Russia, Florida, and ancient Rome. These hunters crawl out of sink holes and between the spaces in the fabric of the universe, all in search of human prey, and with none so dangerous as man himself. A personal favourite is the Japanese-inspired Two Birds, by Evan Dicken a supernatural tale of betrayal that is full of acrobatic military prowess, and which, strangely, put me in mind of the Grimms’ fable of The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats. Blending mythology and military themes, Snafu Hunters offers up thirteen bloody stories of hunters, all with unexpected depth and uncanny craftsmanship, proving once again that genre fiction can be superbly written. With gorgeous cover art by Dean Samed, Hunters is a must-have for lovers of military sci-fi.

Good compilation of military horror/sci if
Overall pretty good. No bad or boring stories. Secret War was great and would love a full novelization of that story.

I recommend the whole SNAFU series
I'm surprised at the continued quality of this series. Hunters is the 5th themed collection in the military horror SNAFU series. Overall the quality has been stellar. You don't need to read them in order. Although some authors have multiple stories following the same characters spread across multiple volumes, each story is stand alone. I highly recommend the entire SNAFU series.

Love scifi military horror and this book delivers
Some of the other SNAFU compilations have been sporadic in their ability to deliver. This one delivers on all fronts. Especially memorable were the stories set in Viet Nam and WWII. Well done, keep em coming!

Many stories - good reads !
Excellent collection of stories. I definitely would buy books from most of them. Some have tragic endings, some less so. And there's also some familiars from other SNAFU-books - that was very interesting...and again - I would buy the full stories from those !Definitely a good read and worth buying !

"Vampires don't glitter"
Monsters are real and vampires would rank as purse dogs to some of these. If you want to chase nasty things in the dark, bring the right weapons Oh, and pray. Or at least that helps in theory.

Best SNAFU yet!!
WOW! This is, for me, the best SNAFU to date. It's not often I read an anthology and get something out of every single story. But here, I did. Admittedly, most of the stories tread a very similar path where a group of soldiers go looking for some kind of beast/demon/monster....but that doesn't matter, because each story is unique, exciting, action-packed and incredibly satisfying. I thought things couldn't get and better after the opening two stories. In particular Apex Predator. But, they did. James A. Moores excellent war story featuring the wonderful Mr Crowley provided and early highlight and was also the longest story in the collection. Kirsten Cross (a Snafu regular) sent us on a hunt after some hard core vampires when a training exercise suddenly becomes very real! The Secret War, Outbreak and in particular Droch-Fhola went bang! bang! bang! and these three back-to-back stories really got me thinking about how good this anthology is. Patrick Freivald's Bonked made me feel like I was reading a comic book, but was also very cool and featured augmented agents chasing drugged up freaks! It's a bloody collection and already a contender for my read of the year. SNAFU: Future Warfare drops in a couple of months. I have no doubt it will be another excellent addition to this growing collection but it will have to be pretty damn special to top this! 6 stars!!!!
