Happy Mouth Round Ring Eggbutt Shaped Mullen Mouth Horse Bits

After doing a lot of research, I was a little suprised to learn how painful a split snaffle bit could be and I decided to get two of these. One for my husbands horse who hates the bit and one for my horse who is good taking a bit but I no longer liked the idea of putting a split snaffle in his mouth as he is a good boy and does not need over control (or pain!) Anyway, my husbands mare gave her usual bad time getting the bit in, but once she had it in her mouth you could see a change come over her. No head shaking, no over chewing the bit, and a much nicer head position as she was no longer fighting with her bit. He was also able to use more reign then leg on her for a change. My gelding loved it too and rewarded me with a nice peppy ride.

I really disliked how bulky this bit is, I suppose I figured it would come much thinner. Its bulk is just as painful for a horse as a very thin bit, there is just no in between on this one. I also got the smallest size (5") and it was still way too long, bulky and painful for my small headed horse. It was so large the whole bit would rotate in her mouth causing it to swivel on the headstall. Otherwise it is extremely well made, very durable and never showed any type of wear after my mare had been chomping on it for a couple hours two days in a row. Overall would not buy again, the bulk of the bit itself is just excessive.

It seems to be well made and safe for soft mouths. I got the 5.5" and discovered it was a bit too big for most of my horses, so I'll be getting a 5" one as well for the 15 to 15.3H horses so it's a better fit without having to crank up the headstall. The horse it does fit doesn't continually chomp on it like he does with other bits I've tried on him and he's very responsive to it with a feather light touch. Sweet!

If you really want to try it check the bit carefully every day. Run your fingers over the entire surface area for anything that feels rough. I had a small cut on the bottom that sliced my horse's tongue. Until that point she liked it very well but I will not use this type of bit again. I don't know how the cut in the bit got there but it was NOT a dental issue.

My horse doesn't like bits. Period. But he opens his mouth for his new happy mouth bit.
