Ouch Moments: When Words Are Used in Hurtful Ways

Great topic, small gaff
I was glad to see this topic addressed in a way my young granddaughters could understand it, but that was a real awkward moment when one of the insults was "You throw like a girl." I found myself trying to explain that some people used to find that insulting, but of course it isn't. Throwing like a girl is great!!!

Read this ahead of time; there is one moment ...
Read this ahead of time; there is one moment when a child calls another child "gay." I read this to first grade and used it as a teachable moment, but many students didn't know what was meant or why it was an Ouch moment. I will continue to use this as a school counselor.

This book brings up some great, and tough
I am currently using this book with my 2nd graders during Classroom Guidance lessons. This book brings up some great, and tough, conversation, about choices we have when we hear mean words.

Nice, Kind, book
I like how this book presents everyone. It mentions that everyone needs help when ouch words are used to hurt others even the person saying the bad words.

This book is good. Its a little advanced for a 4.5 year old I think. This would be great for a kindergartner or someone in school.

Just what I was looking for!
I am a school counselor and lent this book to a teacher who was having difficulty with students being unkind to each other. She LOVED it and said it helped with a class discussion.

I was really hopeful that it would be a good resource for teaching older elementary students about microaggressions
When I ordered this book, I was really hopeful that it would be a good resource for teaching older elementary students about microaggressions. I was disappointed at first because when I read it, I didn't think it was explicit enough. However, I just read it with second graders who were prepared to talk about microaggressions and it was great! The students had read and discussed "Just Kidding" and "Sorry!" by Trudy Ludwig and seen skits related to microaggressions at a school assembly. This preparation was really helpful so when we read "Ouch! moments," they were ready and were able to share openly about how they were feeling and things they'd experienced. The book was helpful to "tie things together" and give the student opportunities to think about different ways they can handle "ouch moments." So, not exactly what I expected, very useful nonetheless and the afterward by Kevin Nadal was also very helpful.
