Valeriy Sokolov young violinist
Excellent production, would like to have had a little more about his life so far, at 20 there is little to tell. But perhaps it would have been interesting to have seen him at the Yehudi Menuhin earlier

Judging a DVD from it's cover
You can't always judge a DVD from it's cover, but in this case it worked!

A most enjoyable and varied recital
This disc was conceived by the producer as a tribute to the outstanding young violinist, Valeriy Sokolov at the age of 16 and while all the freshness of youth remained. Viewers today, have the opportunity to see many fine young instrumentalists so how does this performance rate?Firstly it must be stated that, without question, there are no technical problems to consider as both Sokolov and his excellent and unsung young accompanist, Svetlana Kosenko, are well up to the significant technical challenges of the recital. The recital ranges far across the musical spectrum starting with Beethoven's sonata 7, continuing with Prokofiev sonata 2 then progressing through works by Ysaye, Saint Saens, Bartok/Szigeti, Skorikh and finally ending quietly with one of the Dvorak Songs my Mother taught me.As can be seen there are considerable variations of musical period and style to be considered here from the Classical world of Beethoven, the intensely lyrical but also spiky world of Prokofiev, the more remotely impressionistic world of Ysaye through to the lighter but musically satisfying worlds of the remaining composers. Throughout this recital the two players play as one and deliver satisfyingly serious interpretations of all. Only at the end applause does Sokolov give a radiant smile of pleasure although his accompanist had melted somewhat earlier. So, a very fine recital indeed and recorded in excellent stereo and with good, but sometimes very close, camera work. The element of spontaneous joy resulting from the act of making music such as can frequently be seen playing across the lips of other young artists such as Sarah Chang at any age from 13 (violin) or Yuja Wang also from any similar age (piano)will not be seen here - nor is it in any way a necessity in this context. A seriously enjoyable and satisfying recital is the perceived aim and in that it totally succeeds. Highly recommended therefore.............................................Some dialogue from the comments section that may offer further help:I do agree with you.I was about to write a comment, but yours is ideal.RegardsMarcelo. Valeriy Sokolov, A Natural Born Fiddler DVD
On this wonderful dvd there is an interview with Valeriy Sokolov, and the following pieces performed by him: Ludwig van Beethoven Violin Sonata No7 in C minor, Sergei Prokofiev Violin Sonata No. 2 in D-major, Eugene Ysaye Violin Sonata No. 3 "Ballade", Camille Saint-Saens Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso in A minor, Bela Bartok/Szigeti Hungarian Songs, Miroslav Skorikh Spanish Dance, Anton Dvorak Song my mother taught me. Total time 93'23 min. It is must have for every lover of the violin! Valeriy Sokolov has it all: technical virtuosity and the most beautiful lyrical expression and it gives one a deep sense of joy to listen to him, and also to watch him. This film was made in 2003 when the artist was only 16.
