Amazing Book!
The book is a great overview of the lives of two of the Church’s greatest saints. It’s an easy read and more enjoyable because the author is a former federal prosecutor and judge. I went on a spending spree buying a lot of the books in the footnotes and bibliography!

Saints of grace and courage
Conrad’s contemplation of renowned 16th century English martyrs John Fisher and Thomas More rewards the reader with new insights into these two famous saints, who knew each other and faced the same challenge: Henry VIII’s usurpation of the role of the Pope. The book resonates for the contemporary reader, who might face similar challenges in the present day.

Saints worth knowing more deeply
We model our lives, ideally, on Jesus and on saints who most nearly model Him. In these times of political turmoil and lies, these two men provide powerful models of truth, sanity, and courage. Yes, the best way to solidify the right way to live in our minds is to look hard at those who lived to the end as true men of God. A truly strengthening read.

two men for our times from centuries ago
Today we live in a society characterized by instant gratification, total lack of tolerance for opposing views and deep alienation from our true purpose on earth. Judge Conrad shows us in the lives of two counselors to Henry VIII, John Fisher and the much better known Thomas More, both very different men, both of whom loved every precious moment of life on earth but would nevertheless give up power, position even life itself to keep faith with their word to the Lord. they were both patriots and loyal counselors to their king but they would not agree that the kings word was supreme overlord and they both knew that the king they served would execute them for such "disloyalty". Judge conrad takes us through their lives and shows us real human beings, dynamic complicated men who knew and were willing to act upon their belief that life on earth, important as it was was merely a dress rehearsal for eternal life. Interestingly both of these men believed that the people that were harassing them, they're jailers, they're X-Ecutioners would be their friends in heaven. This is an amazing faith, certainly mocked very much today but these two men held that faith, lived by their faith and ultimately died for that faith. They went joyfully to the gallows because they knew that there was a better life thereafter. in the world where we live today where everything is secular, physical ,immediate and ultimately empty these two men show by example that we can have a much greater destiny if we are willing to embrace it.
