Q: are the straps long enough to carry the bag on your shoulder?

No. The straps are about 5" tall at the highest point. They are very sturdy and hold all the stuff needed to carry.

Q: do long tools, like trowels and claws, stay in the pockets, or do they fall out?

That may depend on how heavy and big your tools are. I put larger tools sideways in the larger pocket (and an old hammer -- for pounding in stakes -- in the big center pocket) and have not had any problems. I use the smaller side pockets for my seed packets, keys, cell phone, etc. The side pockets are about the height of a seed packet and are sturdy, but are not very deep, so they may hold a trowel. I doubt that the small side pockets could hold a claw.

Q: Are the outside pockets large enough to hold a skein of red heart super saver yarn?

I also crochet and knit and I would not recommend it for yarn. The outside pockets are not deep enough, it will cover only half the skein.

Q: Is this machine washable?

No - You would have to spot wash with a rag. It has some cardboard in the bottom that would probably not do well in the washing machine.
