One of the best books about the music industry I’ve read
My entry point to rave culture nearly 30 years ago was through XL Recordings, so this book is really close to my heart. The opening few chapters are really a trip down memory lane for me. Was amazed to discover I have the exact same hand-written white label that was pictured too. This is a goldmine of education, entertainment and inspiration. For about 10 years I didn’t really pay much attention to XL, as musically my attention was elsewhere (in electronic music) so I’m discovering some of the records released during this period (as well as loads of other great music) for the first time thanks to this book. It’s almost making me want to get back in the studio and start writing again. Most fascinating though is how from it’s humble beginnings in rave culture, XL became the springboard for unleashing Adele to the world and how the dynamic between the artist, the label and Richard himself helped change the lives of everyone involved immeasurably. I finished this in a couple of days. Couldn’t put it down.

Couldn't put this book down
Thank you to Rich for such an insightful and enjoyable book, this is not just a history of a record label but the story of a man finding success & then finding himself as a human being, a father & a producer of some of the most touching & personal music to have been created in the electronic era, all the while running the label that has touched so many lives over the past four decades. By far one of the music biogs I have ever had the pleasure to read.

A Musical and Spiritual Oddysey
This book was so relatable to me, mirroring my own musical journey from hip hop, through the rave scene and encompassing so many other sub genres. I remember XL's first rave compilation with fondness and subsequent releases: Prodigy, House of Pain, White Stripes, The Streets, Vampire Weekend all have a place in my heart and my music collection. Richard has a kindness and humility that shines through. I really warmed to him, always able to self reflect and identify his own flaws. Such an interesting life. I wish I had experienced some of the best bits and also so pleased not to have experienced the worst. Thanks Rich.
