For introductory courses in Web Design. The Fundamentals of Web Development for the New Designer Basics of Web Design: HTML5 & CSS3 is the comprehensive source material for beginners in web design and development. The hands-on text introduces major topics in two-page sections, focusing on key concepts and providing interactive exercises. All the basics of web designs, from creating web pages to publishing them online, are explored in-depth by each chapter of this book. With a focus on HTML5 and CSS3 coding techniques, the Third Edition prepares readers to take advantage of the most modern and popular platforms for web development. Exploring both โhard skills,โ such as HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets, as well as โsoft skillsโ like web design and publishing to the web, the text teaches coders all the fundamental information they need to design successful websites. Review: Book for HTML/CSS pedestrians and tourists. NOT FOR PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. - Overall I liked this book in the context of a "my first-time in HTML5/CSS3 book" Note: If you have ever done any programming work before, there are two styles of book: A hand-holding book which spoon-feeds line by line which gives you no room to think of where to use the commands, and essentially gives no independent thought process to the student. Career people hate this style of book because it's just rote memory. These books are for tourists. The other style of book is a reference book with a separate teachers guide and curriculum, which is what you really want, increases time with the subject matter and helps you to remember many tags and which browsers work with them and common practices found on the top websites. These books are for professionals. What this book is: Excellent first-time through HTML/CSS book, it gives you a good grounding and dives into some good higher level items. The author obviously cares about the work, and does a good job of telling why things work the way they do. In some ways, this book has been written more for a teacher to spoon feed the class line by line than an achieving students book. This is a tourist book. It is not even close to "professional grade" I can see someone buying it for their child to increase their interest in technology, but if you're in post-secondary, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Summary: This book is nice for tourists so it earns three stars. It's pedestrian and non-professional nature looses the top two stars. It's not big either which makes it easy to carry around to coffee shops and libraries to study. Overall, I would recommend it especially for the hands-on practice sections. Those were most beneficial if you look at anything.

Good for school, but not for industry practitioners.
The author has done a good job covering the majority of important features of HTML5 and CSS. This book is not a comprehensive reference and should not be purchased as such. This book is designed to be used in an educational environment. Read this book for school, nothing else. Without question, this is a good text to teach from. There is a fourth edition now.
