Mata Hari. Her name means "Eyes of the Dawn," but her loyalties are less clear. When she takes two former friends now on opposite sides of the war as lovers, she finds herself a pawn in the dangerous world of cat-and-mouse espionage. As the stakes grow higher and the war grows deadlier, her guilt torments her. But if she risks everything to save the man she loves, who will save Mata Hari?

Such a routine scapegoat!
"Mata Hari"; 'deceptions caught up with her' etc.: This is called "trying a case in/by the media". It may be a shock but Mata Hari is not a "dead subject"; there are numerous relations and many others who jump immediately to her defense, noting that it was standard Frenchie/patriarchal/military stuff at the time to make a scapegoat to distract the public because they were losing a war. Her maneuvers were also standard for the time, making the best of routinely mitigated circumstances just to 'get by' in wartime, and there is not then nor now, the slightest evidence she compromised anything. In fact, the descriptions indicate the Frenchies merely used their towering powers to locate the nicest woman of the time and brutally murdered her for politics and internal propaganda, more or less like today i.e. witness Phil Spector for kicks not politics. I would maneuver over a line myself to suggest that, still drunk from routinely murdering 6 million women during the 1400 years of Inquisition, they easily parlayed that into yet another murder to serve a patriarchal 'devil' of scapegoat, this time for the military. "You haven't got a leg to stand on", for your case, remembering yet another victim with the missing leg: Mata Hari wasn't even grouchy like that for the probably deliberately pornographically-transparent excuse, which the movie presented as a merely "out for blood" or routine aggressive prosecution: the patriarchy makes every female murder or female anything -- even marriages -- as a male-aggression war or 'deal' between -- you guessed it -- males. This starts as just comment on your blurb, not yet the movie itself. The movie left out the 'nice' indicator of her recorded last words to the firing squad, the early 20th century equivalent of "Have a nice day", and probably conflated it with the 5th century equivalent of a 'dumb blond' look. As for "Frenchies" for the 1914 French military extenders, I can repeat the routine note today as same then, this time for them as well as from them i.e. saying the same thing about them they said about her: "Dead: can't file the requisite complaint". The 'fez' on the firing squad: insinuates or brags what? That the only Frenchies who kill innocent women are the remnants/remainders of the 11th century sweep of Islam across Europe? That the French courts have to hire foreign mercenaries to murder their victims, more or less like today with the shadow 'no Habeus Corpus protection against arbitrary detention and torture' US-located government of today? That the thereby-dis'orient'ed audience evaluations derived, are worthless for legal/other purposes, more of less like today? Insinuations are your problem, not mine for noticing it, right? The movie gets an "A" for acting and production etc.; an "F" for historical accuracy and verity; and the rating average thereby of "C". Note no complete name: ducks both the bombs and the decades of invective and 'no papers' machinations from disparacios to instant evictions, to thefts, to being used for grooming, anticipated, noting that Internet searches for Inquisition info are carefully censored/tailored, and for mentioning 5th c. Britain implied. Have a nice day.

BH
I saw it when it first came out, and think there is some footage missing from this, and think there may have been an alternate ending. But I could be wrong, it has been a couple decades..

A boring movie based on an interesting subject
I have yet to find a really good movie about Mata Hari. With a fascinating and intriguing character like herself you would think there would be something out there that captures her true history and not just the sensationalism around her story. This film was boring, left so much out about who she was and was centered and exploited the sexuality part of her story. She was much more than that. True to many films in the early 80's where the film was all about nudity and very little substance.
