do you need your phone for it to work?

Hello, it depends on what you want to do. To set up the Lovebox a phone or a computer is required. To send a message, a phone is required. But to receive a message, once the Lovebox has been set up, it is not necessary to have a phone.

What happens to the messages once they have been viewed? Is it possible to save messages?

If you download the app, and test send a message to your box, then any message you view on the box gets saved on the app. Not sure how long they last in the app but i can see previous messages sent to me on the app.
