Q: How do you teach your dog or cat to drink from it?

I've had these (one manufacturer or another) for almost 30 years. Current dog is 130 pounds of rottweiler. Hold the center spike down and water flows. Dog drinks the water. Move your hand and the dog licks the water remaining on the spike which causes it to keep flowing. Training finished. Anymore he cocks his head, holds the spike up with one fang, and the water flows into his mouth. Not rocket science. If your dog can't figure it out after a couple times, you need a new dog.

Q: I can’t get them to stop leaking.

Did you make sure the oring (seal) inside is seated correctly. If yes, you might have to replace the oring...Any hardware store should be able to match your old one. Hope that solves your problem.

Q: Are you supposed to continuously leave your hose/faucet on in order for this to work? Isn't that expensive?

The answer is YES, and NO. Yes you leave the faucet on all the time so the device will work when the dog (or cat) licks it. But, NO, it does not waste any water as it only lets water out when licked by the pet. The "trick" is in the training of the dog to know how to use it. First you take away the normal water bowl. Install the Lixit, BUT leave it a little lose on the faucet so it has a very small drip. When the dog gets thirsty he will seek out the water drip, but when he licks it, the Lixit will dispense a mouthful of fresh water. After 2 or three days of him learning how and where to drink, you can tighten it up and stop the small training drip. Then throw the water bowl away.... this thing works GREAT! (The dog and cat love it!)

Yes, if they can reach the faucet. The pressure required to make the water flow is not much. Maybe you could teach a small dog to walk up some steps to be able to reach.
