This is a serious book which teaches children that not everyone is as lucky as we are. Many people live in countries where they cannot protect their families from poverty, starvation or violence. The determination with which the men and women and children in these stories find ways to escape their old lives and find new ones is inspiring, and I can imagine young readers will be captivated by the dangers they overcame to travel to freedom.

This book is well written and thought provoking. Provides both a worldly perspective and wide variety of stories of all kinds of people facing all kinds of challenges. A must read for children all over!

This is a wonderful book that has inspired our entire family to learn more about the stories of courage and resilience that led many of these refugees to other lands and to ultimately thrive in their lives. The illustrations are stunning and the stories brief, but poignant.

Incredible stories of bravery and perseverance that will inspire readers. Some people undertook arduous physical journeys, some faced risk and uncertainty in escape, some had to build a new life in a new culture, and some risked their own well-being to help others. This book gives readers perspective on difficult situations that people have had to endure in the modern world and recent history, but the vignettes provide a hopeful message that humans are capable of overcoming adversity.The picture book style may suggest that the book is for younger kids, but the stories would be very impactful for older grade school and middle school kids.
