Read the instructions that come with the flagpole.
The flagpole was easy to assemble, but you need the enclosed instructions to adjust the height and lock the height in place. The instructions also suggest that you put sand in the base. For my purpose's this wasn't necessary, but without sand, the flagpole may be a little shaky. That is the reason that I gave "sturdiness" only 4 stars; it is all in the way that I choose to use the flagpole.
