Fantastic account of one of the Coast Guard's most challenging rescues!
The book provides a detailed and compelling narrative of not only the rescue of the crew of the sinking cruise ship, but also provides some detailed and often overlooked historical background of the Coast Guard. This history includes the Coast Guard's role in the very first flight at Kill Devil Hills, and culminates with the current Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, NC, and their modern day role. The subject rescue of the book occurred in 2000, before the days of social media, but the book nevertheless highlights the media storm that followed for a mission that to this day holds the world's record for the most persons ever rescued by a single helicopter. If you like aviation, military, or maritime history, or just like to know what it's like for the rescuers involved, you will love this book.
