Significance in Small Things
The Rustle turns out to be a hidden underfoot world worthy of a David Attenborough series - an epic allegorical tale of ants fighting for survival in a changing world. Their wonderfully evocative names – old Five Legs, Black Sting, Dew-Lover, Still One, Dreamer, Queen of Queens – bring them instantly to life and linger long after the book is finished. The descriptions of nature in the raw are beautifully and poignantly drawn by Robin Hawdon. The stresses on a tightly-knit community challenged by war make this an exciting story with a clear moral thread and a wider message about the human condition. Superb for older children and would make a gripping animated film.

Watership Down for Ants?
A delightful and thought provoking read. I will never step on an ant again! We can learn such a lot from them. Not a bad template for a modern democracy.

I love this book - a feat of imagination and empathy
I love this book - a feat of imagination and empathy. Young people need to make the leap into the soul of the natural world if they are to have any interest in taking care of it, and books like this form a vital part of that process.

A Rustle in the Grass
'A Rustle in the Grass' tells the story of an ant colony, who must deal with the threat posed by another species of ant living nearby. It is an engaging and entertaining story, but the factual errors somewhat spoiled it for me. Obviously with this kind of story some degree of anthropomorphism is inevitable, and I can accept the need for each ant to be a self-aware individual in order for it to work. What I found harder to accept was the frequent references to physical structures ants do not actually possess, such as skulls and lungs, and the fact that all the characters, with the exception of the queen, are male, when the vast majority of ants in a colony are sterile females. These are issues which could easily have been avoided without harm to the plot. That said, it is an enjoyable read for anyone who likes animal stories, and might particularly appeal to younger readers who are less likely to notice the mistakes.

Great book
I read this book when I was 10 years old and the story has always stuck with me so I HAD to add it to my collection. This is a great book that will draw you into the story & will stick into your mind. I can’t even count on how many times I have thought about this book when dealing with different people in my life (especially the aggressive ones with no purpose in life but to hurt and take from others).

Blast from the past is still a wonderful read.
This was the 1st or 2nd chapter book my dad read to me as a kid (Watership down was the other), it was great to find this again, but the font in this copy is larger than the original making it easier to read.

One of our favorite books. My daughter requested this book for her 19th birthday after she read mine. She wanted the old original dust jacket, not the new one that is around on the web. So found it here on Amazon. She was thrilled to receive it! It's a keeper and must have book to read and own.

Great story, about ants and their quests.
I love this book! It is written so sofisticated, playfull, humoristic, truthfull. I love the story, the way the reader is kept both by wit and by wanting to know how it will end. I bought this copy because my son asked for his own (he will be 30 in September).
