USS Alabama (BB-60): From Tarawa, Leyte Gulf, and Okinawa, to Museum Ship (Legends of Warfare: Naval, 20)

USS Alabama still exists (as a museum at Mobile, Alabama), as does one of her three sisterships, USS Massachusetts (as another museum, at Fall River, Massachusetts). I hope to visit at least one of them before I pop my clogs.As the author, David Doyle has produced yet another commendable book in easily digestible English, enriched by drawings in plan and elevation of the ship...omissions which normally detract from 'Legends of Warfare' publications.I have still deducted a star because the photos and their texts are interesting, but often of greatest use to modellers. I myself would have preferred a page or two of tabulated operational details, for example: on Alabama's 16" guns, their rate of fire per minute, their maximum range for direct and plunging fire; the time taken in flight; similar details for all her other guns; the strengths, weaknesses and ranges of her evolving radar; etc. Several existing photos and their text could have been deleted, at scant if any loss, to make room.

キール据付から博物館である現在まで、アラバマの生涯を綴った写真集です。レジュメは「試し読み」を見ていただくとして今までのシリーズ同様、紙質がよく写真もかなり鮮明なものが多数掲載されています。博物館である艦上写真（60ページ近く）は遠景、細部、艦内等ほとんどカラー写真でさらに大戦中のカラー画像も15枚程度含まれキャプションも充実しています。アラバマはアイオワ級と異なり大戦後の活動がほとんどないので、保存艦である現在も比較的大戦時の原型をとどめており模型作成などに参考となる情報も多いと思います。また今号より小さめの図面やイラストが数枚掲載されるようになりました。今まであまり見かけなかった写真もあり、例えば以前から疑問だった後部カタパルト近隣にあるホエールボートの配置方法が、甲板固定ではなく4輪台車に乗せて移動できるようになっている様が確認できる画像もありました。（時々位置が変わっていたり、係留する土台が無かったりした理由がやっとわかりました）アラバマに関する濃密な資料としておススメの書籍で、編集、画質、紙質などが大変バランスよく、現時点ではコストパフォーマンスが高い大変良い資料だと思います。
