A remarkable examination of football and cuture
For those who don't like "politics in their football" (which, in itself, is a political statement), this book isn't for you. For the rest of us, who understand that politics and football are life, this is one of the best ever written.

Entusiasmante

1312 is 10/10
James has done it again. 1312 Among The Ultras is another superbly researched book that takes us to the dark side of the beautiful game. James does not seek to glorify or condone the actions of the ultras. Instead, he tries to explain the different motives and history of those who would probably call themselves the most passionate of fans. Indonesian domestic football receives no coverage in Europe, yet investigating the ultras of Persija, the country's biggest club from the capital Jakarta, gave the author one of the worst moments of his life which is told in fascinating style. I had no idea in which country ultras were first introduced (no spoilers) or that Los Angeles FC had nine ultras groups. A top read.

Not a bad read but I expected more
The author clearly went through a lot of effort and money to meet the several, hard-to-get-to ultra groups and definetely spent much time investigating politics and money sources. Sounded real good. However, all the stories are quite short and honestly, often a little boring ("the team lost 3 to nill"). Some stories are an exciting read, others read as if he had experienced many exciting adventures, then got bored with the subject and wrote the book just to get over it. The styles of the different chapters are not coherent and some read easier than others.5 for the effort and background information, however, only 3 stars for the book itself
