Heartbreaking, but if an author chooses to do that - more justification is required
I watched the film first and thought it was alright (four out of five stars) but then was impatient to find out what happens next. The second book was great. And I couldn't wait to find out what's next. I read the reviews but not enough to find out the ending but I got the idea that nothing goods was going to happen at the end.I liked the split-character narration - very cleaver and for me was not confusing at all like other reviews said. It gives two angles on the same situation - unusual and nice to know what Tobias (or just a man) thinks for once (albeit written by a woman :))I do slightly disagree with Veronica choosing to drive Tobias' character somewhat into the ground as 2/3 way into the book you can't help but think "Tris, just leave him, he doesn't deserve someone like you!" But her forgiving him just adds more to the development of her character and makes her better. Come on, there is just too many films and books these days with strong male characters that make female characters take a back seat! So this part is ok and not as horrific as some other reviews said. The ending is another matter. I think people mainly give the book low rating simply because they feel the ending was unfair, unjustified, unexpected and they just feel sad, heartbroken and want Tris to be alive. I feel all the same things too. I want to forget this book ever existed just like some other reviewers said BUT does this make the book bad? NOT AT ALL! Any book that provokes an emotional response like that is a great book! Only a few chapters in you can guess that one of the main characters is going to die. Then throughout the book you hope that it is not going to happen. The way Tobias' character is being diminished you kind of feel that it is going to be him who dies but the ending is unexpected, which is also good.I have to agree that Tris died sort of 'in vain', that more reasons had to be provided, the situation should have been 10 times more desperate to warrant her death. I feel that if she died at the end of the second book on that table from being injected with the death serum it would have been more justified somehow. But this is just me reacting, the book made me feel and think and smile, it made me angry and on edge, it made me read it until 2am when I had work next day... and it made me sad and heartbroken. Only books that do nothing to you deserve low rating. And in most of the reviews you can see people react to it ... So it is a very good book!

Both sides of the fence
Third and final volume in the Divergent series, a young adult dystopian post apocalyptic trilogy. This began with Divergent (Divergent, Book 1). And this volume being the final one means it's obviously not a jumping on point.Regular readers of the series can read on.This book runs for five hundred and twenty pages. It is divided into fifty six chapters, plus an epilogue. It does contain some violence, one bit of mildly strong language, and some scenes of a mild adult nature. And it is an ending to the story, bringing things to a complete close at the end.In the wake of events in book two, the factions are gone. People have to get used to life in the city being rather different. And the knowledge of what lies beyond. There are those who want to find out about that. When Tris and friends do so, their lives are changed again. And yet more difficult choices await..This one is, as with the first two books, written in first person present tense. But it switches the viewpoint character quite often. Tobias narrating almost as many chapters as Tris does. The prose is pretty readable from the off, and the story moves along at a good steady pace. There's not a lot of action early on, but its one of those books that does keep you going anyhow because you're constantly expecting developments. And developments you get.The discoveries Tris and Co make are quite interesting - with some good writing to show things beyond their perspective, but not necessarily those of the reader - and tell you a lot more about why this world is the way that it is.The central idea is quite interesting and does allows for a few more looks at social issues which do force you to think about them. The focus is pretty much solely on all this, though. Life back in the city and how things are going there barely gets a look in.The changing viewpoint isn't entirely successful, because even though each chapter tells you which character it is dealing with, the use of first person present tense for both does mean it's sometimes easy to forget which one is narrating. However, big events do happen at just the right point to develop the story. The course of true love doesn't run entirely smoothly. But slightly more interesting than the central relationship is the relationship between Tris and her brother, and how she deals with what he did. This is very convincing. There is a good build up to an action ending. But how you react to the way it goes down is going to be a matter of opinion. This is a pretty good read, still offering an interesting society with lots of moral food for thought. And it does end in a way that will stay with the reader for a long time. Although ultimately, as you can see from the variation in the ratings, this is a book that is going to divide opinion. So whether you want to finish the series is up to you. But personally, I'm glad I did.
