Moccamaster KBGV Select

I waited for this unit to go on sale and got it during Prime Days. Saved over 130. This unit makes great coffee quickly. No frills. It is basically like a sophisticated percolator but delivers consistent brewing every time. I fill the pot and dump into reservoir. Put my freshly ground coffee into the filter and in 5 minutes I have a high quality pot of coffee. Some have complained about the drip but I have not seen any inconsistency. I used to have a single serve unit which was more time consuming every time I wanted to brew a cup. This unit is perfect for people who just want coffee! I would wait for a sale as I didn’t want to pay over 300. It’s so simple to use a Caveman can do it. 😁

After using this coffee maker for a while, I can honestly say it's the best and most consistent one I've ever owned. The quality of the coffee is what really sets it apart. The flavor is remarkably similar to a good pour-over—rich, smooth, and full-bodied without any strange taste from the machine or its materials. Every pot has been consistently excellent. I also appreciate how simple it is to use. There are no clocks, timers, touchscreens, or endless brew settings to scroll through. You simply choose half pot or full pot, turn it on, and let it do its job. It heats up quickly and brews a full pot in just a few minutes, making it perfect for busy mornings. The brewing temperature seems to be right where it should be, and the hot plate keeps the coffee at an ideal drinking temperature without making it taste burnt. By the time I finish my first cup, the second tastes just as fresh and enjoyable as the first. If you're looking for a coffee maker that prioritizes making exceptional coffee over packing in unnecessary features, I can't recommend this one enough. It's beautifully built, incredibly easy to use, and consistently produces one of the best cups of coffee I've had from an automatic drip machine.

I love this coffee maker because it feels like the rare appliance that is both beautiful and genuinely functional. The off-white color looks clean and classic on the counter, and the whole design feels intentional without being complicated. What I appreciate most is how simple it is to use. It brews a full 40 oz pot in about 4–6 minutes, and the selector lets you choose between a half or full carafe, which is perfect for different kinds of mornings. The coffee tastes smooth and consistent, and I like that it does not require a lot of buttons, settings, or mental energy before the day has even started. It is definitely an investment, but for me, it feels like one of those products that earns its place in the home because I use it constantly and it makes a daily routine feel better. I also appreciate the quality feel, automatic drip-stop basket, and the auto shutoff, which adds peace of mind. The only caveat is that this is not a programmable coffee maker with lots of digital features. But honestly, that is part of what I like about it. It is straightforward, reliable, and makes great coffee without turning coffee into a project.

I've never spent this much on a coffee maker in my life and never thought I would. But I'm glad I did. I have had Cuisinart coffee makers for years and I am so tired of having to buy a new Cuisinart after a couple of years of use when it begins to malfunction. I have had to return brand new Cuisinart coffee makers as they didn't work right and then wait for the replacement. Don't know why I was so loyal to the brand. Maybe because they used to be much better and lasted longer. This Moccamaster has a five year warranty - that tells you something right there (don't forget to register yours if you purchase one - they have an online form). It's made in the Netherlands with meticulous crafting and testing. It's nice looking. It's easy to clean. It's fast. It makes hot coffee. It's smaller so it fits on my countertop nicely without taking up a lot of room. At first I wasn't sure if I'd like the Rose Gold even though it is pretty, but I've come to like it and it's a change from the stainless steel I've had for years. And, the Rose Gold was $60 less, so there's that! Keep in mind that though this carafe holds ten cups, this is ten 4 ounce cups, not 6-8 ounce mugs. Fine by me as I drink a few mugs in the morning and then I'm done, and I'm the only one drinking coffee. These take paper filters - I've used a gold filter for many years because I don't like tossing things in the landfill. However, two things: my gold filter does fit in there should I want to use it; and you can rinse the paper filters and reuse them a few times. Between those two things, less in the landfill. There is research to indicate that using paper filters doesn't affect your cholesterol levels like the gold permanent filters. So something to think about. However using the paper filters does affect taste to some degree - I have to get used to the more 'smoother' taste of the coffee without the oils. But on the good side, there's not the sludgy stuff at the bottom of my cup, and no coffee grounds escaping into my cup. Though it indicates to use fresh ground beans, I use both fresh ground and already ground. The fresh ground can taste better, but sometimes the already ground is convenient and easy and right there, and on sale. This is so easy to use right out of the box, once you put the parts in place. This is a no frills type coffee maker - there isn't a timer but I never used the timer on my Cuisinart, not once, so I don't miss that feature at all. There's no clock but why do I need a clock? I don't even have clocks in my house other than what is on my stove and cable box. There's two buttons: one to select half pot or full pot, and the on/off button. The plug is weird. You have to kind of turn it partially sideways. It was annoying at first but now I just do it and don't think about it. Cord is short, which I like. Hate snaking cords - I like the cord hidden behind the coffee maker and this one stays behind just great. What I also like is there isn't those two deep dark areas that are difficult to get to and clean like in the Cuisinart and many other coffee machines. No matter how much I cleaned the machine, I always wondered how clean it really was down in there where you pour the water and where the brewing happens I guess. Here you can see where the water is, and it only goes through the stainless steel 'arm' and then down the little funnel and into the grounds. Cleaning is simple. There is no coffee going inside the machine anywhere. They suggest descaling it about every 3 months using a descaler and not vinegar. I never liked to use vinegar anyway. Out of the box I 'brewed' water only 3 times (they suggest 2) to be sure any factory dust or whatever was gone. It's quiet. No loud beeping when it's done. No loud gargling gurgles. Though you can hear it gently brewing. And you can see the bubbles coming up in the water - it happens fast! Mine has a warming plate. I don't know if all of the models have it. The KBGV Select has a full pot or half pot selection. I used the half pot selection this morning when I brewed about a half pot and my coffee tasted better than when I used the full pot selection on half a pot - so it does something. I'm happy with mine and glad I finally purchased it after doing so much reading and research on coffee machines - for months! -- the Moccamaster kept coming up over and over in the Best Coffee Makers lists - and often number 1. If you are on the fence, hop on over, if you don't mind the price and don't mind it's a no-frills machine. The best part of it is the quality - I shouldn't have to buy another coffee machine for many many years!

I purchased a KBGV Select in "polished silver" because it was on sale (less than $200 for Prime day). What a steal, right? Ha. No, these guys are trying to dump inventory because they know how poorly they were built. I was very hesitant to buy one of these, even with the deep sale price, because there are sooooooo many reviews calling out chipped hot plates, switches just "dropping out" of their slots and dangling inside the chassis, and even used/dirty/broken parts on arrival. I got mine today and I made sure to video record the unboxing in case the Amazon customer service bots try to give me a hard time about returning it - which I am doing (my wife just finished completing the request for a UPS drop-off). Anyway, I opened it up and did NOT see any chips on the hot plate. "Jackpot!" I thought to myself. I sat the unit on the counter and admired how nice it looks. It does look nice, in my opinion, as a big paper weight. But I digress... I went to test the switches. Power switch is nice and snappy, and clearly turns "on" and "off." I also can hear the clicking sound people mentioned in reviews, which can help get your attention when the heating element turns off (or so people say). All good there. Then I went to check the brew selector switch - the one that lets you choose between "half pot" and "full pot" (yes I know that's not exactly how the function works but I'm not sure how else to describe it). When I press it to the "half pot" side, it kind of clicks a little and stays in place, but it's "squishy" feeling. As in, the switch isn't firmly secured in the slot. I made sure not to push too hard because I didn't want to dislodge it. When I press the "full pot" side of the switch, it's very "muddy" feeling and doesn't click or "engage." If I push it a little harder it does stay on "full pot," but otherwise it pulls back over to the "half pot" side. I just don't trust it. It doesn't look like an assembly issue. It seems more like they use switches that tend to be defective, or they aren't using compatible parts. The switches look to be pretty similar, but they're installed at a 180 degree orientation relative to each other. I don't know if maybe one of them is installed upside down? I'm not going to take anything apart to find out because I don't want to screw up the return process or make things difficult. But maybe that's the case. After all I've read about Technivorm Moccamaster products, I thought this was going to be my "forever coffee machine" (sorry I've watched too much HGTV). But it's junk. Like actual junk. I was going to buy one of the new hi-tech machines with a bloom function and temp control, but I thought to myself "Nah, I'll get the moccamaster because they sound like the Miele vacuum cleaners of the coffee world." Forget it. Now I know how Alaska airlines felt when that 737 door plug blew out. Maybe former Boeing employees work at Technivorm.

This review is for the Moccamaster 53934 KBGV Select. I am a craft coffee roaster...I roast my own coffee purchased from all over the world. I want a coffee brewer that does justice to the effort that I have put into buying and roasting my green coffee beans. If you're like me, you're not just wondering if the Moccamaster is a good coffee maker, but you are wondering if it is the one to buy...is it worth the money? With that in mind, I will talk about the Moccamaster 53934 KBGV Select and compare it to a competing coffee maker in hopes of being of assistance in making your decision; but I won't go into great detail so I'm not repeating marketing hype. The Moccamaster 53934 KBGV Select is a really pretty machine. It looks just like it's pictured on Amazon. I bought the teal model. So, if you like the looks in the pictures, then you'll like the looks of the machine. It meets the SCAA gold cup standard for brewing, and so it does make very good coffee. It takes a standard #4 cone filter which are easy to find. It has a switch that can be set to either half pot or full pot (the primary reason I bought this particular model). The carafe is glass and it is thin; nothing wrong with that but don't dink it on the counter or the sink as it will likely crack. Having said that, I think that coffee brewed in glass tastes a tiny bit better....maybe. I can tell very little difference between coffee brewed in glass and that brewed in stainless. By all accounts, the internal working of the coffee maker are excellent and should be expected to last a long time. In short, it a good coffee making machine and it brews good coffee. Now the cons: The lid over the water reservoir and the lid over the coffee filter are both loose pieces. No big deal, but when you are filling the water and putting coffee in the filter, you have to kind of juggle those loose lids and find a place to put them on the counter that is out of the way. Not a deal breaker, but be aware that this adds just a bit of "busyness" to the coffee brewing process. Also, the power switch which initiates the brew keeps the hot plate on will stay on for like 100 minutes if you do not remember to turn it off, even if the carafe is not on the machine. I would think a machine of this quality would have some kind of sensor to turn the hot plate off if the carafe is not on the machine. One final note; I purchased my Moccamaster 53934 KBGV Select during Prime days for $245 instead of the normal $349...the lowest price ever offered by Technivorm. I have always wanted a Moccamaster, but without that $104 savings? I would not have purhcased it. $349 is too much for a household coffee maker. For that matter, so is $245. I also own the OXO 9 Cup maker with a stainless thermal carafe. It is an attractive, modern looking machine. It also is a SCAA gold cup standard coffee brewer that can make a half or whole pot. The carafe is virtually indestructible and keeps a full pot of coffee very hot for a long time (1.5-2 hours). Both the water reservoir lid and filter housing lid are hinged permentantly to the machine so they are never in the way or taking up counter space. Are the internal working as highly engineered and constructed as those of the Moccamaster 53934 KBGV Select? Probably not. But, I've had my OXO for three years and it works flawlessly every time. OXO engineers their products well and I expect their machine to last a long time. The OXO does not have a hot plate so no issue like that of the Moccamaster. One neat thing it does do; it senses if the carafe is in place and if it is not in place you cannot brew. Nice safety/convenience feature, I think. Cons: none really, unless you consider a stainless carafe a con. I do not. There might be a miniscule difference in taste (one that cannot be quantified), but I cannot definitively say there is. I have been drinking my own roasts for the last three years brewed in the OXO. Every good roast has tasted good; every poor roast has tasted poor. But, that's on me the roaster....not on the brewer. At just about $200 full price, the OXO is a bargain compared to the Moccamaster. If you chose to buy the Moccamaster 53934 KBGV Select you've got a very good machine. If you pay $349 for it, I have to say that you spent a lot more money for a coffee brewer than you needed it. If you really want the Moccamaster, buy it and be proud of it. You'll like the coffee. If you want a very good coffee maker and you don't absolutely have to own a Moccamaster, be a better steward of your money and buy the OXO for about $200 or less. You won't be dissapointed with either brewer, but you might be disappointed with yourself for spending more than you need to for a good coffee maker. FYI: 1)The Moccamaster 53934 KBGV Select is about 14" tall and the OXO is about 15"...if this matters to you. 2) I use the Melitta Bamboo #4 filters on both machines because they don't impart a papery taste to the coffee...IMO. I was suggested to buy this for my wife who has been drinking coffee since the age of five. I also purchased the stainless filter, must have I will say. Every morning, she or myself will say fill the switch! The coffee is that good! This machine brews fast, no leaking, no burning, just coffee smells. The funnel in the pot ensures there is no settlement or uneven (weak or strong) coffee. The temperature of the coffee is perfect. No need to select hotter or colder. Only if you are doing a full carafe or half full for the carafe warmer. Simple. Fast. Correct.

In all honesty, I was expecting a lot more for the price and definitely a bit disappointed. The machine itself has a great aesthetic, but there are definitely things that could be improved. First off, there are a lot of plastic pieces that just make it feel cheap. Second, I do not like how the coffee pot slides in and out of the machine. There needs to be more space so the glass carafe doesn’t have to slide on the bottom of the heat plate everytime you pull it in and out. Third, I had to return the first machine because the switch to brew a half pot/whole pot did not work. I received a replacement and same thing- it just brews a whole pot regardless! It makes a good pot of coffee, but my husband and I both agree that it tastes exactly the same as when we brewed in our Ninja coffee maker. Honestly, the only reason we replaced our ninja was because we’ve had it for eight years and I was just looking for something new. I will likely be requesting a refund instead of an exchange this time around.

Our grind and brew machine died on us and so we started using a French press and/or Areo press. Both options worked fine, but I like to make a pot in the morning so my wife can have a cup, and I can take the rest to work in a thermos. I started watching reviews on drip coffee makers and came across this unit. Everything about it was appealing. -THE LOOK- Aesthetically, it's stunning. Timeless, classic look. It's very clean, the textured finish looks very durable, doesn't finger print, and the color choices are excellent. (I wanted the pistachio color but once I pulled the trigger couldn't wait for it to be shipped so opted for my second choice). While brewing it looks neat as the water bubbles up the center column and into the outlet. -THE BREWING OPTIONS- Very basic controls, but the half pot select allows you to not only brew a half pot, but modifies blooming duration. From there the sky is the limit with grind options and strength without all the buttons and programming. It's also pretty fast- full pot in 6 minutes. -THE TASTE- I've had it 5 days and have made 7-8 pots... It's the best tasting coffee (obviously the beans, grind and everything can make the difference... but when I have a Tim Hortons or Starbucks it's just not the same) and I drink black coffee. -THE DESIGN- If it ain't broke... this design has been around for 50 years and is hand made in the Netherlands and comes with a 5 year warranty. It's not ground breaking but that's the point. Keep it simple. Quality parts, copper heating element, and separate elements for water heating and the carafe. The removable water outlet arm is a nice touch if it gets a fingerprint on it or if your need to clean- simply pop off. -THE PRICE- Ok, so this is super expensive for "just a coffee brewer" but personally I'd rather spend big money on a quality piece that has service able parts, rather than a machine 1/3 the price that may only last 2-4 years. This is a lifetime machine if cared for. Personally I drink at least 3 large black coffees/ day. Starbucks dark roast black is $4.00 CAD. It'll pay for itself in no time. -THE ONLY NEGATIVE- The glass carafe seems really fragile and thin. I'm paranoid it will break. I do not allow anyone to operate my machine as I'm scared they wouldn't be as careful as I when I rinse it. So if you buy pre ground coffee and want an easy pot of coffee, or like to grind fresh and experiment in grams per liter, ground size etc... but must have the best- buy this.

Makes delicious coffee and looks very sleek in my kitchen. Happy with this purchase and would recommend it.

Me parece un poco cara. Está fabricada principalmente de piezas plásticas. La jarra receptora es de un cristal muy delgado y se siente frágil. Las primeras 2 o 3 veces que la usé me decepcionó por la escasa extraccion que producía un café insípido, pero empecé a jugar con el tamaño de la molienda y cantidades de manera diferente a la que usaba en otras cafeteras de goteo y entonces sucedió la magia, el café resultante es realmente delicioso. Yo uso el sistema de media jarra y esta se filtra en menos de 4 minutos. También me di cuenta que seguramente el secreto está en que la cafetera logra calentar el agua a una temperatura más adecuada a diferencia de otras cafeteras más baratas. Sin embargo también observo que el contacto del agua caliente con el café molido no es parejo, ya que el café que queda más alejada del chorro caliente no es tocada por el agua, de tal manera que siempre al inicio de la filtración muevo el café con una cuchara. Mi unica duda es, al ser tan rápida la filtración, no se estará desperdiciando una gran cantidad de café? Y una más, la caja dice Made in China y eso me preocupó, pero en la base de la máquina se confirma que es europea.

El producto venía dañado! es una pena que después de ver tantas opiniones de este excelente producto venga de esta manera. me dí la oportunidad de hacer un gasto tan grande y me llevo una gran desepcion. A veces lo caro sale muy malo ni hablar como decimos en México... va pa atrás! The product came damaged! It's a shame that after seeing so many reviews of this excellent product it comes this way. I gave myself the opportunity to make such a big expense and I am very disappointed.
