Strangely absorbing, realistic and even educational.
In a way this is a review of the previous Ben Schroeder series books as well as this one. I occasionally wonder why I find them so entertaining when, in many places, they seem too detailed; the same events may be described in the narrative, then in statements in court by witnesses and barristers, then there are what feel like totally realistic summaries by judges. How is it that this isn't tedious? I think the answer is that the writing feels completely authentic. In some of the books the plots verge on the ludicrous. This one, however, is very believable, in my opinion. Despite it being number six of a series, it does not feel tired or formulaic (unlike the vast majority of series churned out and marketed on Kindle). There are few thrills, as such, but tension aplenty. If you enjoy a bit of an intellectual challenge in your fiction, you may enjoy Peter Murphy's work a great deal.

Fabulously written can't believe these things are happening today
Loved the whole insight into these court cases and how the law can be for one and not for others......feeling quite sad about the whole story but good end ....or was it the end.....very intriguing. ..great!!!!!

Another splendid and topical story
Though set in the early 1970s, and reflecting the attitudes of he time, this is a relevant and topical story for our times. Not least the issue of government interference in the laws of the country. The true prevalence of the sexual abuse of children by those in positions of power and influence wasn't appreciated even as the millennium approached. So many more have suffered than should have owing to the kind of cover-up described in this fictitious but all too realistic story. Gripping stuff that made one wonder what makes gone wonder what being covered up now!

Another fantastic Ben Schroeder book
Having previously read one other book in the series I was really looking forward to reading this one and I wasn’t disappointed. Peter Murphy is a fantastic author and his attention to detail is fantastic so much so you could easily think this was a true story. The book is set in the 1970’s and Ben Schroeder along with his colleagues represents a mother and daughter in a sexual abuse case, the mother from the 1940’s the daughter from the current time. Both had been abused whilst attending a boarding school but the “establishment” are determined that this case fails and when Special Branch become involved then it seems justice won’t be done.

Bargain table book
Liked this ... although I usually go for American courtroom dramas. Will look out for another book by this author

Excellent story
This is so realistic and so compelling that it is difficult to imagine that life is like that, but unfortunately as we know it is, and the story relates to people young and old who have been affected by and have to live with its consequences.

Bravo Mr. Murphy
It seems that I am in danger of running out of words of praise for magnificent novels in this exceptional series, penned by Peter Murphy. This time Ben Schroeder and his colleagues are entangled in sexual abuse case in 1974, involving highly prominent figures in politics and church. Again, as usual, the establishment hides behind the lofty, but trite phrases of protecting the national security and public order. In the deeply, divided by class, British society, the upper echelons would always easily win over the regular people not predisposed for high positions by breeding and right education. But these are 70's and things are starting to change. Another masterful book bravely tackling the hot issue without exploiting it. I deeply treasure these books and eagerly await every next one. Bravo Mr. Murphy.

Has anything changed?
One law for the rich and one for the poor? Maybe it's true. The book is entitled 'a courtroom drama', but really the drama lies in the cover-ups of misbehaviour on the part of the establishment. This goes on all over the world, but the pretension of law and order contrasts well with the misuse of power, position and authority in densely-populated London and south-east England. The legal world v. the moral world. The characters and their interaction are well done. Following the legal arguments , the legal manoeuvring and, in this book, the client representation and its successes and faillures is intellectually challenging but also fascinating.

A good read
An excellent story. The ending was a little disappointing, but realistic.

Outstanding
Brilliant in every conceivable way. Only a barrister with integrity and honesty could write such brilliant courtroom accounts. Peter Murphy leaves a very great legacy.

A Very Revealing Book
An intriguing story about power. The power of men in high places or take advantage of young girls who do not share the power of those who abused them. It was so satisfying to see that brave people can and did fight to get justice. I know this is a novel but it mirrors changes in society.
