Hero seduces 18 yr old heroine when she was a naieve virgin, then let her father convince him that she sold herself to him at the direction of said father. Father lied as he needed money and hoped hero would give it to him. Hero did not pay and vowed vengeance as he was piqued that naieve heroine deceived him (she had no clue about evil dad). They meet again after father commits suicide and she is still naieve and clueless. In all this time she still does not know what a shallow human being her father was and it costs her, as she allows herself to suffer the brunt of the hero’s attempt at revenge for the sake of her sister. She makes it through the many challenges she is confronted with because she is a guileless and really decent character. It may have helped her character if she had been a scheming gold digger, but I liked her as is. Not enough interaction between hero and heroine, but enough to let you know that she was bowled over by him. For the hero’s part, I think his as written was to be the strong silent type. The storyline with the sister and the Hero’s ward made this a really entertaining harlequin!

This is first time in 20 years I have read one of Anne Mather's books. What appealed to me at the age of 16 certainly does not at the age of 36. I will not be buying any of her books ever again. She needs to get with it and move with the times.
