WEN 2.3-Amp 8-Inch 5-Speed Cast Iron Benchtop Drill Press (4206T)

I needed a drill press for my wood shop but I knew it would not be a piece of equipment I would use every day. I had purchased a Wen belt sander and it was a beast so I decided to try the drill press and I am glad I did. I got the box and it was extremely well packed. Putting it together was a common sense procedure that took no time. For a hundred dollar drill press I am more than impressed. I put it together in literally 5 minutes and had it up and running. Ran it and used it for a bit drilling holes and bought it mainly to drill holes for birdhouses and the occasional hole I need for furniture. The motor is very quiet and solid and the construction is awesome. I really was not expecting it to be this solid for the price. I changed the speeds on it a couple times and it went very smoothly with no issues. It has a place to mount the chuck tool which is handy and the operating handle for the press is really smooth and seems durable. Now this is a good hobby press for the novice and could handle hours of work if needed but realistically it is not a commercial grade but will take some abuse. It has fit the bill for what I need and for the price and quality has exceeded my expectations and I am pretty picky about my tools. The Wen belt sander you can turn it upside down and use it for a table sander. Low cost tools with great quality builds

Bought this on Black Friday really cheap. I figured for the price, why not? It arrived and was quite a bit smaller than I imagined. It really is a hobbyist tool. A bit small for woodworking, but I've been able to get everything done I wanted to with it. Given the small shop I have, I'm OK with the size, but probably would've sized up if I realized just how small this was. That being said, the quality of this thing is really surprising given the price. Nothing is cheaply made and I really do think it will last and perform well for a long time. Don't hesitate to buy a WEN if you're wanting a quality tool at a really good price.

I bought this as my first drill press after years of doing everything with a handheld drill, and the difference in my work was immediate. Perpendicular holes every time, no more blowout on the back side because I couldn't hold the drill square. Assembly took about fifteen minutes and everything fit like it should. No burrs to file, no misaligned holes, no fighting the column. Chuck went on clean. The thing I was most worried about at this price was runout, since that's the usual complaint with budget presses. Mine has none that I can detect. I've run it through pine, walnut and hard maple and the bit tracks true with no visible wobble at the chuck. Hardwood especially is where a sloppy spindle shows itself, and the maple came out clean. The table is genuinely flat, and the tilt lock holds where you set it. It doesn't creep on you mid-hole, which matters more than people realize when you're drilling anything angled. Changing speeds means opening the top and moving the belt, and I'll admit I expected to hate that. In practice it takes maybe thirty seconds and I stopped thinking about it after the first week. If you're doing production work you'd want variable speed, but for a weekend shop it's a non-issue. A few things to know before you buy, none of them defects, just the size of tool this is. The 8-inch swing means you can only reach 4 inches from the center of a hole to the column, so it's not the press for centering holes in a wide panel. Spindle travel is 2 inches, which is plenty for most furniture work but limits deep boring. And the 6.5-inch table is small, so most people end up screwing on a plywood auxiliary table with a fence. I'd plan on doing that eventually. For a hobbyist who wants a real cast iron drill press without spending several hundred dollars, this hits well above what I expected. Bolt it to your bench and it'll do everything a weekend woodworker needs.

I was very impressed at the quality of this WEN drill press for about a hundred bucks. It came in four pices which were a breeze to set up. After a bit of test drilling on some plywood scraps, I used the drill to drill new holes in a Bosch aluminum router plate. The WEN drill press worked like a charm. One thing that would make it even better would be a flat-bottomed work rest/table. The table supplied is solid enough and is easy to move up and down the shaft, but because of the underside shape there is not a firm flat surface, and clamping pieces to it takes some skill and maybe a few bad words. I'll be securing a piece of small plywood to the underside that should help.

Wen 8 inch drill press 4206T. Came in heavy box with molded styrofoam. All wrapped in plastic. No missing or broken parts. No dings or chipped paint. All factory installed bolts, parts, etc were tight. Easy to put together. Bits checked out 90 deg to table. No wobble at all. Quite. The table slides up and down easily and holds tight. It would be next to impossible for it to slip after lock bolt is tightened. I tried a 2 inch hole saw at 2100 rpm and easily drilled through 1 inch pine. Need to slow down speed for hardwood or other materials. I owned fab shop for 40 years and had big drill presses. Got this for hobby and repair work around house. It is absolutely a well made little drill press. Dont know the limits yet, but plenty for most of us DIY. You need to use good quality sharp bits and hole saws with a drill press. Cheap wore out bits/saws just wont cut it. Dont use blade bits with the threads. Could get hurt if hangs up. Look, i dont know how they can produce this for a $100. You wont go wrong with this tool and price. I have a Wen air nailer, also great. Wen makes very good products for a good price.

Better than expected. The motor is quiet and the spindle is quiet and smooth and no more noisy than a 1960's vintage high quality Delta Drill Press (back in the super quality days). Very stable, I got 5 thousandths of an inch runout on the chuck - very acceptable for hobby use. Never over tighten a Chuck to keep it on center (less runout) over time. Its all high quality in this unit. It went together perfectly. DO NOT over tighten ANY bolts, handles, or set screws... use Blue Locktite and torque them with moderate pressure only. There is a lot of cast iron in the unit, and it can break from torquing bolts, set screws, and such too tightly. Note: The pullys are aluminum and not steel. This is ok for light hobbiest use, but for pro use, steel pullies are better (and more costly). Do not over tighten the table position locking lever, use just enough snug force, it will stay in place. Read the instructions. Its important to properly remove all oil residue from the chuck and its tapered mounting point on the spindle to prevent it from falling out. Make sure the 3 prongs are fully up inside the chuck when "tapping" it into place. Read the manual for maintenence: Just like the machined surface on a table saw, applying that smelly furniture paste wax to the exposed metal keeps it from rusting due to humidity. Lubricate the Quill per the manual. This is not an industrial drill press, don't abuse it. Treat it with respect and DONT use it as a milling machine if you want to drill accurately.

The more I learn how to use this product, the more I appreciate it. The drill press is made of high quality materials with the fence and table very helpful once dialed in to the job. The provided stop blocks allow quick repetitive and accurate cuts for the chairs that I make. It creates confidence that parts will fit precisely together. The power of a drill press this size is impressive for hard and soft wood. Speed adjustments are simple to make. By taking your time it's easy to reduce or eliminate burn marks I've begun using this press to make joinery and appreciate the easy cleanup relative to using a router. The sacrificial plate in the table is easily replaceable and helps reduce tear out. The accuracy is far superior to a hand held drill and lining up repetitive cuts has saved me hours. The cost is also a plus. My recommendation, if you are a hobbyist or have a small woodshed, this press will upgrade your quality and speed up your builds.

Operate at 120 V, 60 Hz. In India, it is not favorable, to operate the machine safely, additional voltage converter will be needed however, at this total cost you will get better bench drill favourable to Indian condition (220V 50Hz). Moreover, it is not so effective for metal based drilling.

Need to return due to faulty motor. It gets very hot after 20sec of running without load , even without the belt. Theres no resistance when turn the spindle with hand . If I would keep running it would definitely burned. Maybe better luck next time :)

Originally I did not want something this big or expensive. I want to drill through 15mm square tubing and thin steel plate. But as looked at reviews of smaller hobby drill presses for crafting perhaps or the ones that looked like a 1/2' drill built into a drill press frame, I came to realize that they all operate at a high rpm and the one that looks like the vertical 1/2" drill is quite noisy. So I reluctantly purchased this larger unit. It is built like a traditional drill press with a pully system for changing speeds. One notable plus; the substantial chuck is not quite full size and easily grips small drill bits, better that some hand drills that I have owned. Another big plus is that the drill is very, very quiet and smooth. Things I did not know before purchasing: very fine steel wool is needed to prep the tapered chuck before it is hammered into place (not a big deal). The drill press should be bolted down. For my uses I setup my Work-Mate on the balcony and have drilled a couple of holes in it to better suit the 1/2' bolts used to hold it down. Also, the drill press vise that was included with my unit at a price lower than the regular price of the drill, also needs to be bolted to the drill press' table. So I purchased the necessary bolts, nuts, washers to do all this, and now the whole setup for this takes 5 minutes. Up until now, I've used it for the purposes stated above, but today I gave it a bigger challenge: cutting ten 5/32" holes in 1/2" and 5/8" mild steel plates. I used a dab of cutting paste to lube the drill bit a couple of times for each hole. The cutting was easy and accurate, and the drill bit was cutting just as easy on the last hole as the first. I used the recommended pulley setup for this, 750 rpm. I bet the systems that operate at several times that speed would overheat the drill bits and themselves.....
