The main feeling I have after reading this book is a better understanding of life
It took me two days to finish this book. This book had a profound effect on me. I cried, I smiled, I read parts that I completely identified with. The main feeling I have after reading this book is a better understanding of life. This book was inspiring. It's funny I had no clue about Freddy Negrete. When I met him I Immediately liked him. As I watched him work I was so captivated by how he was doing my tattoo. I have two other tattoos but this was different. I feel honored to have the tattoo of my dreams done by a artist such as Freddy. After reading his book I feel grateful and humbled to have met such an authentic human being. In the book he really shares his life with you in such a way that you can't stop reading. I loved this book! Sincerely Shellie M

Worth reading
This is a historic book when it comes to the subject of tattooing. Its a sad story because now freddy negrete lost his other son isaiah soon after the book was released. Rip boo boo.

A really powerful, evocative read.
Smile Now, Cry Later : Guns, Gangs, and Tattoos - My Life in Black and GrayI started reading Smile Now,Cry Later and couldn’t put it down. A real rollercoaster ride of a redemptive tale, with a final punch that really moved me to my core. This book resonated with me on so many levels. The way in which the history of the gangs, tattoos, policing in LA are interlaced with Freddie’s own personal journey is perfect- giving you a much needed understanding of the world he inhabited. At times I felt like a voyeur peering into a place I would never dare to actually enter, held completely fascinated. I was struck by his talent as an artist and the depth of his soul. The ending is so personal and upsetting , but you really can’t help rooting for him from the beginning. I would happily recommend this to anyone, whether you’re interested in tattoos or just love a great story. A really powerful, evocative read.
