A long overdue retrospective of one of the best comics artists ever. A great read with lots of anecdotes and pix throughout.

Severin's illustrative style meant that often his work is overlooked in a comic book universe of flashy over the top illustration. A lot of comics though need more solid story telling than flash and Severin excelled at that . This book is a well done career retrospective and biography, includes a remarkable amount of well reproduced art from his childhood work for the Hobo News (!) to his later work at Marvel DC, and Dark Horse. It includes full color reprints of two Golden Age America Eagle stories . Well worth the money and Severin's career ran from the 1940s to shortly before his death in 2012 so his story is also the tale of 60 years of American comic books and humor magazines. Highly recommended .

Even though the book is big, you'll want a magnifying glass to bring his amazing attention to detail closer. Although the book is oversize, you'll want a magnifying glass to look at the detail on some of his work. Fortunately, the inside front cover is big enough for his jaw-dropping illo of his creation American Eagle to make an impact. Severin was a stickler for historical accuracy. His drawings are spot on. He was one of those rare giants whose mastery never deteriorated. The material he produced in his seventies and eighties as as good as anything he's ever done. Afterword by Chuck Dixon followed by two pages of testimonials by industry greats. Biga and Cooke have done an outstanding job.

Impeccably designed, this book is a fitting recap of John Severin’s career. By reading this, I learned a lot about projects that I never knew he worked on throughout his illustrious career. I first got to know his art via CRACKED magazine. But he was capable of so much more than just humor. And he was an incredible artist. My favorite is his CONAN THE REAVER graphic novel. This book is a great buy and I highly recommend it. It’s worth every penny.
