A brief but fun dose of EXO...
Military enlistments have led to a constantly changing roster of EXO members in the last couple of years. Chen and Suho are currently off doing their service, with Baekhyun and Chanyeol joining them soon after the release of this album. But it's not all bad news, as Don't Fight The Feeling marks the return of D.O, Xiumin and Lay after their absence from EXO's last album. I'd already bought the photobook version of this album elsewhere, but bought the Kai version here as a present for somebody else. With this version, you get a Kai-centric photobook, an I.D card, stickers and a random photocard. The album itself contains five tracks:1) Don't Fight The Feeling - The title track, a fun dance number and an easy-going pleasure to listen to. I wouldn't rate is as one of my favourite EXO tracks when put against their back catalogue, but it's enjoyable all the same. Hearing Lay burst into the track around the midway point never fails to make me smile.2) Paradise - I think I prefer this to Don't Fight The Feeling in all honesty. This track made me realize how much I'd missed Xiumin's voice these last couple of years, and continuing with all the leaps forward he made with his solo album last year, Kai's vocals really shine through here.3) No Matter - Another funky, upbeat track and this time it's Chanyeol and Sehun's sections that stand out to me. Not a great deal to say about this one, but it's pleasing to the ears and fits in well as the album's mid-point.4) Runaway - This was the B-side that seemed to get the most love and attention, at least if social media was anything to go by. For good reason too, as it's also my favourite of the album. Hearing everyone's vocals combined for the chorus gives this track some real "oomf". Runaway allows the members with deeper voices to play to their strengths - credit has to go to Baekhyun's impressive runs on here as well.5) Just As Usual - After four more upbeat tracks, Just As Usual closes us out on a slower and comforting note. It's a good "closing the album" track, and the lyrics are really sweet.… and that's it for Don't Fight The Feeling. At five tracks long, it is unfortunately but understandably brief. Given the difficulties with members' availability, I absolutely get why this was the case and are still very grateful for what we got. Mandatory military enlistment can seriously damage the lifespan of a K-Pop group when members have to leave for two years and at staggered times too. At least with this release, we get to experience an EXO comeback in the midst of all this. It's good for keeping fans satiated and to prove that EXO haven't gone anywhere. Here's to the next album, whenever it may be.
