can I take the music files and capture on a thumbdrive? I don't want to burn a cd but to transfer to thumbdrive and then play on laptop

Yes, you can. But if the songs are on a CD, you would need a CD drive (player) to convert the music to MP3s or similar format, or just save them as .wav files. (The reason people convert music to MP3s is that the file sizes are much smaller.) You can "rip" the CD in a program such as Windows Media Player. If the songs are already on your computer, then you can just copy & paste the files directly to a thumb drive. I personally keep a large portion of my music collection in the form of MP3s on a thumb drive for listening in the car, instead of storing music on my phone and streaming it to the car stereo via Bluetooth. I just don't like keeping a ton of stuff (like several thousand songs) on my phone. (Plus, some say Bluetooth streaming results in poorer sound quality. I travel a lot, and I'm just too lazy to set up Bluetooth every time I get in a new rental car).

Does this have an aux port for playing cds or just hdmi

No it does NOT have an aux port. It is only used to give a cheap Laptop access to a DVD or CD where it plugs into a USB port on the laptop.
