Too much mateial just "mentioned", not brought together .
This book was interesting, but really needed an editor. Page after page listed people who were in Paris during the occupation, but there was no organization to the book. There were many French words without a translation. It could have been great with about 2/3's of the material organized in a easier to digest order with a plan.

Paris The Jewel under Hitler
A wonderful portrayal of life under the Nazis in war torn Paris and how the Jews and collaborators, horizontales or otherwise, coped both in Vichy France and all over France. Their treatment at the end of the war when those who survived Ravensbruck came home was so shocking, but this is a story of enduring love and persistence in the face of desperate adversity. Incredible research and beautifully written.

One of, if not, the most inspiring, tragic, shocking and powerful books I have ever read. I bought it because I enjoy 1940s fashion and decided to learn a little bit more about this era. I am glad I did.I have learned about aspects of WW2 that I never knew. There was one concentration camp in France for men only. The rate at which the Germans murdered as many people as possible when they knew their days were numbered. The buses and trucks used as mobile gas chambers! I never knew about that! The sad and shameful treatment those who survived experienced when they returned home. The impact on France and Europe - how deep the wounds still run and so much more.I also read about courage and the enormous risks women took to save their country. So many of them never recognised as resistance fighters. An incredible book that will inspire you to show kindness and respect towards your fellow man and always to fight for peace. Without it, nothing else matters. If you love history, this may just be the book for you.

The answers to the question you can't ask at French dinner parties - "What did you do in the war, Great Grandma?"A no nonsense story of the heroines and villains and those who were just caught up in it all.

Myths and memories!
Enormous depth of information, and a real insight into life under long term occupation. It shows how differently many of us might have responded in spite of what we believe.
