There are a few ways to heat it. We use a small propane torch to heat them because it's extremely quick but using a grill, it's best to place the head of the branding iron directly in the flame which should take just a matter of minutes to heat up. The handle is about 12" long so it doesn't get hot at the end but still use caution when grabbing the branding iron out of the heat. Then just place the branding iron in the area that you want to mark it AFTER you've cooked the meat.
