Lonely Planet Philippines: Power, Gender and Sexuality

Not for Everyone
This is a book written by 30-somethings for 30-somethings. If your idea of a perfect holiday is diving, snorkelling, scrambling, scaling, hiking, spelunking or caving, and if you think a day spent without zip-lining from peak to peak is a day wasted, then BUY THIS BOOK! It is written for people like you. On the other hand, if you are like me, of more sedate habits, interested in history, architecture, culture and gentler appreciation of nature or if you are a parent with children, you will find about 80% of your money wasted. This is not to belittle the huge amount of information that exists in the 470 pages. It is simply that, to get to the relevant 20%, the non-adventurer has to dig past pages and pages of endlessly repetitive adventure thrills to locate the desired information. And in some cases NOT. For example, the chapter on Cebu island meticulously (and tiresomely) lists every possible diving spot round the island coastline, but completely forgets to mention the Cebu Safari Park, a lovely collection of over 1000 animals in a hilly parkland setting offering jeep safaris and nice walks, only 10 km from Cebu City. The very brief box on Vegetarianism is obviously written by meat-eaters, from the way it obsesses with “protein”. It is true that vegetarian food is hard to find in the Philippines (although things are improving), but there is no mention of the abundance of cheap fresh fruit and vegetables in the markets. A roadside green coconut can provide a perfect light lunch.I have about 15 LP guides collected over the years and this one needs to be less lop-sided if it is to match them for universal appeal..

Provided Information is not up to date 2022
Provided Information concerning travelling between palawan and mindoro is not up to date spring 2022.Better double check ferry connections and other regulations like S-Pass before travelling, otherwise you might get stuck somewhere, Many lines dont operate the regular schedule, or dont operate at all. Some companies provide their most recent travel Information on Facebook.

Outdated although claiming otherwise.
Currently in my second month of workation in the Philippines. Bought the 14th edition to get some pointers for getting around since Lonely Planet claimed to have had all businesses checked after Covid. However I found this is not the case at all. Quite a lot of accommodations and tour operators I have looked up in the LP guide have closed shop after Covid and for the still existing ones almost all the prices listed in the book are way outdated. In most cases it's much more expensive now.

Base
