An interesting read
An interesting read which is not too technical but has many light hearted and anecdotal stories whilst keeping to the subject

A good all round read.
this is a very entertaining read it gives you the past history of all the heritage lines without being overly weighted down with too much detail and also has some light hearted humour to keep you entertained.Would recomend to anybody interested in our steam heritage.

Rather a let down
Having enjoyed Andrew Martins other books I was looking forward to this volume but found it rather a let downIts easy enough reading and covers a large number of our preserved railways but that may actually be its downfall, there is little story to any of it, just a potted history of the line with a bit of extra detail and anecdotes of the authors visit (these visits seem largely top have been on free press tickets, when surely paying your way to help out these always short of cash preservationists would have been more charitable). It seems to be little more than a guidebook with added anecdotes, as such it missed the mark as a book or guidebook. An enthusiast will already know the details (and be able to spot the many niggly errors in the text - heaven knows why it wasnt proof read by an enthusiast), and its not a guidebook that is useful for a casual visitor planning a day out.Easy to read but I was anticipating much more based on previous work of the author.A generous 3 stars.

Couldn't put it down!
The author is a well-known novelist and I have read most of his excellent "railway detective" stories. He writes beautifully and researches thoroughly - his railway backgrounds are always detailed and accurate. This non-fiction book is a whistle-stop tour round many of the UK's preserved railways. I know some of them, and have actually worked on several, so I can say that he is even-handed and encouraging in his assessments, and includes a wealth of information much of which I had not heard before. But above all, he writes entertainingly so that I found it quite hard to put the book down. An excellent read, highly recommended.
