The Wedding of Zein: And Other Stories

Recommended by Dr Micheal Sells, John Henry Barrows Professor of Islamic History and Literature, who is one of the top most scholars on Islam and the Quran especially. He has written two academic articles on this book in particular.I'll be honest, I do not read fiction very often, because I am mostly reading academic literature, but this is one of my all time favorite fiction books. Not only is the book very comical, but it also shows you a window into the Arab, Islamic, and African worlds. You get to peer inside this traditional culture and see all the social dynamics of a small village in rural Sudan. Since I have personally worked with Sudanese refugees (teaching them English), this book was very enlightening to me personally.

Quite a heartwarming as well as perceptive narrative. One of the finer works of Arabic literature. A very good read.

A masterpiece of world literature!

It showed a slice of life we don't here in America consider when we think of Moslem life. It is a little dated, but it shows humor and a certain tone that is fun to observe.
