Q: Can this be wired to a dimmer switch to control speed, or does it need to be connected to a fan speed switch?

Yes. I used this one, which is recommended by the fan manufacturer. For wide speed ranges, there is an adjustment screw on the inside of the controller. The speed controller allowed everything from full blast to a fully stopped fan. It is perfect for this blower. Basically the screw on the inside controls how much speed range is available when turning the big knob. Q: would you recommend using this fan to split to 3, 4" lines to pull exhaust from 3, 2x2 tents?

Yes, this fan can be used to pull from multiple locations using a Y splitter. You may be able to use the 6" for that small of an area, but I would recommend the 8". You can always hook the 8" up to a fan speed adjuster if for some reason you'd like to dial down the velocity.
