Q: Can the roll sit on the top without falling off instead of needing a roll holder?

In a sticks & bricks home where the plastic holder remains stationary, I'd say it would probably sit there. However, as you can see in the listing photo, the handle on top is not very long at all, and you'd just have to pick up and handle the roll every time you're pulling off paper. In our camper, with the all the shaking during travel, no.

Q: Would this hold a standard roll of paper towels? Trying to protect them from a cat that shreds them!

I'd be glad to check this out if I had a standard roll, but my paper towels are triple roll. The height of a paper towel roll would be fine. The toilet paper we put in there is Scott RV paper, and the rolls are standard size. I'm sorry I can't be more help. Cats are so much fun :)

Lid is easily removed; it just sit on the canister.

Q: Does it fit jumbo rolls? Some reviews say it does & some say it doesn’t. Very confusing.

Depends on how hard you want to push. Some jumbo rolls fit with a little squishing, some fit fine, some don’t fit at all.
