If you just want to check a voltage or continuity: this is not the meter for you. This is a solid piece of refined hardware which delivers consistently. Accuracy isn't in question, reliability isn't a question, although there is a learning curve to the uninitiated; but this isn't an apprentice meter. Some of the features I don't have a particular need for - capacitance, and high resolution resistance: I have a fairly high end LCR meter for such things. For data logging with high precision over a short time and the ability to send said information to a computer... you'd be hard pressed to find a better solution for under 4 grand.

This is the meter to get if you do any sort of troubleshooting.

I took the rest of my xmas gift money and bought this. I wanted a bench multimeter but there was not much of a difference between this and a bench unit. This does all of the voltage logging and functions that a low cost bench meter would. The display is BIG. This makes it easy to set in place and to look over quickly to see what it is doing. I have a V87 as well and its great but it only has the basic functions that a multimeter should have and nothing that is too fancy. Its accurate and it works but the 289 has all of the bells and whistles that a high end piece of test gear should. I have not tested it on the job yet at 3ph 480V but I am guessing there will be not much of a change in the function. The menu is a little difficult but not impossible to use. I'm guessing for the average technician that you are probably going to set it for the few functions that you need it for and the long menu won't be too difficult. If you are an AV/ HAM/ computer hobbyist, this is more than what you need. If you need to have the best, this is it!

Excellent meter for the money. Lightning fast response to continuity (for those of you that like to know this before buying a meter). Easy to use. Learning curve is low with the functions of this meter. The functions are easy to understand. You won't need hours of reading to master its functions, you'll need about 5 minutes.Unit is a reasonable weight and durable. The included magnetic hanger strap is a must for non-bench work.Excellent all around.
